Mar-19-17  Delboy: I'm not sure what white's best line is against 9. ... e4 in the Marshall, but it is clearly not the sequence adopted in this game. 18. d4 allowed the most dramatic finish, but alternatives are not much better. For example 18. Qd1 Nxf2 19. Rxf2 Qg3 and then 20. Rf1 Qh2+ 21. Kf2 Bg3+ 22. Kf3 Bh4, when Qg3# can only be prevented with a queen loss, or similarly 20. Re2 Qh2+ 21. Kf2 Bg3+ 22. Kf3 Bh4.

ChessCoachClark: The position after 18. d4 has been given as a mate in 4 puzzle in several publications. It leads to a Back Rank Mate. However, the reference given is sometimes "Yanowsky vs Toriran, Canada 1953." Note that the game here at CG uses "Janofsky."

Just found that Edward Winter has two articles in 2013 (July/8116 and August/8175) about this game being cited as "Yanowsky v Toriran, Canada 1953" in error.

Raymond Keene's THE TIMES WINNING MOVES (p. 57) and THE TIMES WINNING MOVES 2 (p. 78) give the faulty reference, per Winter.

Also, I personally have seen that CT Art software cites the same chess problem incorrectly. There may be others, so the correct information is good to know.

Stockfish 8 analysis shows that White should have played 18. Qd3 (-6.83, 30 ply) or 18. Qd1 (-9.17, 29 ply). With those two ratings, White needed better choices much earlier!

Apr-11-18  schnarre: ..Mate is unavoidable after 18...Qxf2+. A fine finish.
