Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-20-14  Karpova: Annotations (condensed):

11...Rb8 <Initiation of a deep combination, the contours of which become clearly visible after the next move.>

13...Rb2 <The White ♔ is being encircled.> It seems that 13.Qxc6 was too greedy, maybe 13.Ne5 was better.

14...Ng4 <Threatens immediately or occasionally ...Nxf2.>

15...Qe7 <Tremendous. Black threatens ...Nxe3 and thereby wins a tempo for ...Qa3.> It seems that 15...Nxe3 was already possible and didn't need preparation (16.fxe3 Qg5)

16...Qa3 <Magnificent. Black doesn't fear the apparently devastating blow Bd6.>

17...Rxd2 <The point of the great conception.>

19.Kd1 <White could have prolonged the fight with 19.Kf1 but Black's victory would have only been more magnificent: 19...Rxa2+! 20.Ke1 Rxa1+ 21.Kd2 Ra2+!! 22.Ke1 (22.Kxd3 Nxf2#) 22...Re2+ 23.Kd1 (23.Kf1 Rxe3+) 23...Nxf2+ 24.Kc1 Rc2+ 25.Kb1 Rxc3+ followed by ...Rxc7.>
