Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-31-14  Karpova: This game is from the Championship tournament (<Meisterschaftsturnier>) of the Lower Elbe Chess Federation.

Dr. Emanuel Lasker calls 12.Be3 a mistake (<Versehen>) as this move interferes with the protection of the ♙e4 by the White ♕. He suggests <12.Bd2> instead.

While 30...Qe5 was good, the interesting (not annotated) 30...Nd3 may be even stronger (e. g. 31.Nxd3 exd3 32.Qd1 Rc2). Also worth a look is 32...Qxf4.

White's later attack looks strong, and a possible improvement was 43.Rxe4 Rxe4 44.Qf5. Also worth a look is 45.g5, followed by g6. White is outplayed in the ♖ endgame, and one possible improvement is 46.Kh3 (46...e3 47.Rh5). The final blunder appears to be 50.Rc4, instead 50.Kg4 makes also room for the ♖h6, but White seemed to have put all of his hope in the King's side attack.
