Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-10-14  Marmot PFL: 52...f4! is a nice shot. Maybe white should play 53 Nd2 (intending Ne4) and if 53...Nc5 54 g4 (stopping Kf5 and creating his own passed pawn). It's probably a draw anyway but So kept pressing until white cracks.
Oct-11-14  Wavy: I thought this is a game against Jeffrey Xiong.
Oct-11-14  Wavy: Edit: This is indeed Wesley's game against Ivanov. It is surprising to know that Wesley has almost the same endgame against 2 opponents in this tournament.
Oct-13-14  Conrad93: Ivanov played really well, considering his rating.

He had a drawish position until 52.

wwall: Maybe 52...f4 is not that good and might lose. White can play 53.Nd2 (instead of 53.gxf4?) 53. Nc5 54.gxf4 (instead of 54.g4) 54...Kf5 (54...exf4? 55.Ne4 Nb7 56.Kxf4 should win for White) 55.fxe5 Kxe5 (55...dxe5? 56.Ke3 e4 57.Kd4 should win for White) 56.Ke3 Kf5 57.Nf3 and if 57...Kg4 (or 57...Nb7 58.Nd4 and if 58...Kg4 59.Nb5!), then 58.Ng5 Kxh4 59.Ne4 Nxe4 60.Kxe4 Kg3 61.c5, and it looks good for White. Black might have lost here. And you are saying So? Well, So might not have qualified and win that $100,000 first prize.
Oct-16-14  patzer2: <wwall> Fascinating but extremely complex winning possibility with your find of 53. Nd2! to .

Fritz 12 gives 53. Nd2! Nc5 54. gxf4 Kf5 55. fxe5 Kxe5 56. Ke3 Kf5 57. Nf3 Nb7 58. Nd4+ Kg4

60. Kd4 Kf4 61. Kc3 Ke5 62. Kb4 Nc5 63. Nc7 Nd3+ 64. Kb3 Nc5+ 65. Kc3 Kf5 66. Ne8 Ke5 67. Ng7 Ne4+ 68. Kb3 Nf6 69. Ne6 Ne4 70. Kb4 Nf2 71. Kc3 Ne4+ 72. Kd3 Nf2+ 73. Ke3 Nd1+ 74. Kd2 Nf2 75. Kc1 Ng4 76. Kc2 Ne3+ 77. Kb3 .

No doubt there's room for improvement in this long variation. However, it seems to me that after 52...f4 53. Nd2!, White has all the winning chances and Black will have a hard time finding drawing chances.
