fredthebear: The possible 68.e7? would have blown it. The Black rook goes crazy and just snatches the pawn.

Fredthebear says 75...RxRd8 draws for Black. (Black had no chance to win with blocked doubled pawns, so he must play for the draw.)

It's obvious from 75...Rb8 that Black is leaving the rook en prise because he's thinking draw by stalemate, hoping White gets greedy. Black just missed his chance!

The final move 76.Rd3 threatens mate on the h-file. Sacrificing the Black rook won't do any good now.

Black must feel miserable over this game.

Apr-22-19  FairyPromotion: <Fredthebear says 75...RxRd8 draws for Black.>

75...Rxd8 draws only if white promotes to a major piece. However, both 76. exd8=B! & 76. exd8=N! are winning, and turns out rather easily. The minor piece just captures the g7 pawn, and afterwards it's not even needed. There is even a beautiful variation given by my tablebase:

75...Rxd8 76. exd8=N! Kh8 77. Ne6 Kh7 78. Nxg7 Kh8 79. Nh5!, and now if black takes the knight the g pawn pushes his way to glory.

fredthebear: <FairyPromotion> You are correct! Underpromotion leaves a retreat move for the Black king, which eventually wins for White.
