Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-08-15  zoren: Tragicomic.
Oct-09-15  dumbgai: 96. fxg6 instead of f6 looks like an easy draw. Even though the white king is temporarily cut off, it's virtually impossible to win RP vs R when the pawn is an h-pawn.
Oct-09-15  Nerwal: Both players were rather unsure whether 96. fxg6 was really drawn; quite rightly, because although the flank pawn offers few winning chances, not all positions are drawn. For instance Vidmar vs Bogoljubov, 1936 is quite similar to the game situation after 96. gxf6, but the black king is more actively placed, and therefore White loses. Here 96. gxf6 ♔xg6 97. ♖b8 seems like the easiest way; 97. ♖b1 is trickier.

White was playing on seconds during that weird sequence between moves 89 and 100, seemed tired and hesitated at every turn. But curiously she made the last mistake by playing 100. ♖h7 instantly, overlooking 100. ♖b5 picking up the g pawn and thus drawing. With the king still at e5 it would be lost either way.

Oct-09-15  cro777: An instructive endgame arose after 95.Ke5

This endgame is a theoretical draw. If 95...g5 then 96.f6

In the diagram position Black opted for 95...Ra4. Then not only 96.f6 but also 96.gxf6, 96.Rf7 or 96.Rb5 lead to a draw.

After 96.f6 g5 White made a mistake by playing 97.f7?

Black found the only winning move in this position 97...Rf4!

Oct-10-15  sonia91: <Fishy> Pogonina is a WGM, not a GM (just to point out this)
Oct-10-15  Nerwal: Any +2000 player should be able to hold 3 vs 2 on one wing reasonably comfortably. The real problem is that the human brain doesn't always function properly under pressure and exhaustion...

perfidious: Indeed they should, but I had this ending twice in my career and a 2100 player failed to gain the draw in the first instance, with a 2000 succeeding in holding on.
