Mar-13-17  zb2cr: White wins ♕ for ♖ with 33. ♖xh6+.

If 33. ... gxh6; 34. ♕xf7#.

If 33. ... ♔xh6; 34. ♕xf7 with material advantage and a mate threat on g7.

If 33. ... ♔g8; 34. ♖h8, ♔xh8; 35. ♕xf7.

Mar-13-17  stacase: Seeing that 33.Rh6+ discovers an attack on Black's Queen took about a second or two, seeing that it works took another second or two.
Mar-13-17  agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight.

The white queen x-rays the black queen which is defenseless. Therefore, 33.Rxh6+:

A) 33... Kg8 34.Rh8+ Kxh8 35.Qxf7 + - [Q+P vs r].

B) 33... Kxh6 34.Qxf7 + - [Q+P vs r].

C) 33... gxh6 34.Qxf7#.

Mar-13-17  saturn2: Black on move 8 and white on move 10 abstained fro taking a pawn for reasons which are not obvious to me.
Mar-13-17  YouRang: Monday 33.?

White has an move that to gives check while making a discovered attack on black's queen. This is stuff you learn in Chess 101: <33.Rxh6+>

click for larger view

The only small wrinkle is that black can decline the rook and instead move the K to where it guards the Q via <33...Kg8>, but this rook is a stalker who follows the king with <34.Rh8+>

This time, the rook must be taken, and the black queen must be lost. It appears that mate should follow shortly.

Mar-13-17  AlicesKnight: 33.Rxh6+ (White can capture any of the 4 Black Ps!) - now ...Kxh6 loses the Q, so 33....Kg8. But White now has 34.Rh8+ dragging the K away and winning Q for R. Slightly less usual for a Monday - White wins a Q instead of losing one...
Mar-13-17  RonB52734: <Mating Net>: 33. White to move looks like a Monday puzzle position winning the Black Queen.

I trust that, in the last 18 months, you've been playing the markets!

Mar-13-17  diagonalley: i'm not whether that a novice would foresee 34.R-R8+ ... so i rate this a "monday-and-a-half" puzzle(!)
Mar-13-17  leRevenant: <diagonalley> Interesting comment, given that this was one of my swiftest 'solves' in a very long time.
Mar-13-17  morfishine: <33.Rxh6+> and if Black tries to save his Queen with 33...Kg8, then <34.Rh8+> does the trick

*****

Mar-13-17  TransfiniteCardinal: Easyyyy.
Mar-13-17  daveinsatiable: Seems to me there's an alternative solution here: 33. Rxe7.
33. ... Qxc4 quickly leads to mate for white, but black has to move or protect the queen.

Black can complicate with:
33. ... Bh2+
34. Kh8 Qxh5,
but Rxh7 quickly puts paid to that.

Mar-13-17  saturn2: <daveinsatiable 33 RxNe7> ..QxR
Mar-13-17  stst: Most direct:33.Rxh6+ KxR (or any K move), 34.QxQ leaves Black Q-less, rest is trivial.

More subtle:
33.RxB
(A)RxR 34.QxQ
(B)QxQ, 34.Bxf5+ g6, 35.Bxg6+ Kg8
36.RxR#

Mar-13-17  BOSTER: Nobody asked the Black king to move 25...Kh7 on the same line with white bishop b1.
Mar-13-17  saturn2: <stst (B) 34 Bxf5+ > NxBf5 etc
Mar-13-17  swclark25: <saturn2> I also wonder why Black didn't take the pawn on move 8, but what move did you think White should have made on 10?

Also, would 30)..Rg8 have any advantage over 30)..Kg8?

Mar-13-17  beenthere240: Pia's 31st and 32nd moves make the whole combo possible -- first unguard her queen then move her king into a spot where white's rook can deliver check.
Mar-13-17  saturn2: <swclark25> sorry I meant also black could have taken 10...Bxh4. Whilst I now think at move 8 the c pawn is maybe poisened (white can sacrifice the Ra1 and play Qb3 and Ba3) i dont see why not take the h pawn.

White would the probably play 9. Rb1 and now if Black plays 9...O-O then 10. Qd3 Ba5 11. Ng5 .

Black has no defence. She is lost in 11 moves.

Mar-13-17  swclark25: Thanks for clarifying <saturn2>. I do like 10...Bxh4
Mar-13-17  BOSTER: < saturn2 10...Bxh4 >. White'd play 11.d5 and black knight has to retreat Nb8. If Na5 12.Qa4+ c6 13.dxe6 and white is better, because black queen has to protect Na5 and bishop h4.
Mar-13-17  The Kings Domain: Nice puzzle and nice game.
Mar-13-17  patzer2: Black's decisive mistake is 32...Kh7?? allowing 33. Rxh6+ which wins the Queen with a discovered attack and forces mate.

Instead, 32...Nd5! (diagram below)

click for larger view

puts up significant resistance after 33. Rg6 (not 33. Qxd5?? Bh2+ ) 33...Nxc3 34. Qxc3 Qe7 35. a4 Qe5 36. Qxe5 Bxe5 37. Re6 (+0.82 @ 23 depth, Deep Fritz 15) when Black has practical drawing chances.

Mar-17-17  Moszkowski012273: Actually 32...Nd5 looks pretty good for black. Gives some drawing chances.
