Big Audience Sees Chess Marvel Play Twelve Opponents

A capacity audience greeted Sammy Rzeshewski, 9-year-old Polish chess marvel, when he appeared in the Meier & Frank company auditorium Friday afternoon to play against 12 opponents. The result of the play was three draws, one dispute and eight wins for the youngster. C. G. Givens of Salem, A. G. Johnson and E. F. Short of Portland drew with the little fellow, while O. B. Goldman, Mrs. Harriette Ehricks, Robert Myers, I. G. Schwartz, W. S. Fleming, Jake Wark, A. F. Parker and C.W. DeGraff were defeated. <J. Van Zante put up a great exhibition of chess and when the time limit for the exhibition had passed and neither seemed to have advantage, it mutually was agreed to call the match off and play it later. There were some who believed Van Zante had the better of the play, but Sammy stoutly maintained he was master of the situation.> E.H. Bryant, on of the best versed chess men on the Pacific coast, acted as referee and was highly pleased with the reception tendered the youngster.
