Penguincw: Good Monday morning all! And what a great way to start the week off; with a Monday puzzle.

Straight forward, as it's a queen sac, and then deliver checkmate. 24.Qf6+ gxf6 25.Rf7# 1-0.

1/1 this week.

Jan-16-17  Gregor Samsa Mendel: Hooray, a queen sacrifice Monday.
Jan-16-17  ASchultz: I didn't see any sacrifices to make at first. Qxg7 and Rxg7 clearly lead nowhe...oh, wait, sacrificing doesn't mean taking another piece, necessarily.

Black's ending pawn structure is amusing to me. I've seen the diamond formation, but this is augmented a bit.

Jan-16-17  lost in space: Nearly missed this.

My first „solution" was to 24. Rxg7 Rxg7 25. Qe6+ with mate to follow, not seeing that Rxg7 opened the g8 square for the king.

When locking at other moves than 24...Rxg7 I found 24...Re7 as alternative, and why ever here I saw d8 as square for the king which reminded me that I have to lock for this all in my first variation with Rxg7....

Only afterwards I got 24. Qf6+! That took me minutes, not seconds as usual on Monday

Bad start of the week

Jan-16-17  radtop: Would 23....e5 held?
Jan-16-17  diagonalley: <lost in space> me too!
Jan-16-17  lost in space: <<diagonalley:> <lost in space> me too!>

Long distance hand shake!

I blitz I defentely would have bungled it by playing 24. Rxg7

Jan-16-17  saturn2: Rf7++ after Qf6 is the epauletten mate.
Jan-16-17  agb2002: The material is identical.

The pawn on g7 blocks Rf7#. Hence, 24.Qf6+ gxf6 25.Rf7#.

Jan-16-17  nasher: This took me a long time to solve. I finally got it after remembering the magic formula: look for checks and on Mondays look for a queen sack.
Jan-16-17  YouRang: The black king sits there on f8, wedged between his own rooks: Re8 and Rg8. In front of him, f7 is controlled by the white Pg6.

White happens to have a rook on h7, and sliding it two squares to f7 would be mate, and this is blocked only by black's Pg7.

Can Pg7 be displaced? Yes: 24.Qf6+! gxf6 25.Rf7#

When you see a way to mate without the queen, look for a queen sac to set it up.

Jan-16-17  AlicesKnight: The Black K is too closely guarded by the Rs - trapped in his castle! 24.Qf6+ forces ....gxf6, after which 25.Rf7 is mate
Jan-16-17  patfoley: 23 ...e5 could run into 24 Bh5, threatening 25 c5 and 26 d6.
Jan-16-17  mel gibson: so easy - LOL
Jan-16-17  leRevenant: <diagonalley: <lost in space> me too!> me too, but subtract the nearly :-(
Jan-16-17  Oxspawn: If you can persuade the rook and queen to resist the overwhelming urge to take the pawn on g7, the rest follows. The queen has to stop short at f6; the black pawn does its duty and the white rook sneaks in around the back to g7.The king is trapped by its own armed guards.
Jan-16-17  Cheapo by the Dozen: Except for the g7/f7 typo, my thoughts are as <Oxspawn>'s. :)

But what happens if Black plays 23 ... ed? How does White break through?

Jan-16-17  Mayankk: Yeah. Most of the time spent was in making the g7 sacrifice work. It's amazing how much a capture sacrifice is easier to spot than a non-capture sacrifice. Once you see the f6 manoeuvre after a minute of misguided attempts at g7, you only curse yourself for not seeing it earlier.
Jan-16-17  daveinsatiable: <Cheapo by the Dozen> what happens if Black plays 23 ... ed?

24. Qf6 anyway. Qxf6
25. gxf6, with f7 to follow and no way for black to save the rook on g8.

Jan-16-17  thegoodanarchist: I believe the mate to be delivered is an epaulet mate
Jan-16-17  morfishine: <24.Qf6+> Machado, Machado man

I wanna be, a Machado Man!

A perfect 'it's Monday sac your Queen' puzzle.

As ASchultz and others have hinted, the reason these shots are sometimes missed is because there is nothing on f6. Making a sacrifice on a bare square is the last thing we look at it.

Jan-16-17  leRevenant: A Tuesday, at least, in my book.
Jan-16-17  whiteshark: When you see an <Epaulette #>, ...
Jan-16-17  zb2cr: THe position of the two Black Rooks makes an "epaulette mate" possible. This is normally delivered by the Queen, but in this case the Queen is sacrificed to make it possible for the Rook to deliver it. 24. Qf6+, gxf6; 25. Rf7#.
