tamar: Adhiban's last chance unfortunately came at the time control.

Winning was 40 Rc4 Qd5 41 Kc3 Ke5 42 Qc7+ Kf5 43 Rd4 Nf6! 44 Qc8+ Qe6 45 Qxe6 fxe6 46 Rxa4 h5 47 Rxa6 h4 48 Rd6 3.16/29 Stockfish 030916

Disappointing missing the clincher. As played, the moves 40 Qc7+ Ke7 41 c4 deprived the rook of enough space and the win was gone. 41 Qd8+ Kd6 42 Rc4 would have gotten the winning position again.

It is odds on though that if even a strong GM overlooks a chance such as the suggested retreat the first time round, which is not necessarily obvious to a human player, he will likely miss it the second as well.

tamar: <perfidious> That is what I thought as well. Similar to Petrosian's law that if a good player misses seeing a tactic in the first minute or so, he is unlikely to see it in 10 minutes.

Adhiban mentioned Rc4 as his last chance in the interview, but said he was tempted by 41 c4 e3 42 Qd8+ Kd6 43 c5+ and the possibility of gaining this check tempted him away.

It turns out it is too slow even with gain of tempo.
