Mar-20-17 | | zb2cr: Variation on smothered mate! 28. Qg8+, Rxg8; 29. Rxg8#. First, perhaps? |
Mar-20-17 | | zb2cr: First, definitely! |
Mar-20-17 | | stacase: Well, that took about two seconds |
Mar-20-17 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: Black was outplayed here from start to finish. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Interesting use of the London System (Bf4) vs. the Dutch Defense. Challenging the Bishop with ...e7-e5 by means of some combination of ...d6, ...Nbd7 and ...Qa5 might have improved. After 18.Ne4! Black has already come very close to a hopeless position. |
Mar-20-17 | | ChessHigherCat: Interesting smothered mate position on steroids. Besides 28. Qg8+, mate is unstoppable after 28. Nf7+ Qxf7 29. Qxf7. The question is how black got in such an awful position, but I'm sure we've all been sucked into that sort of apocalyptic not-so-grand finale before. |
Mar-20-17 | | ChessHigherCat: 24. Re8!! is like some kind of supercomputer move. If 24...Rxe8 then the follow up most be 25. Nxc6 Rxc6 and white doesn't even bother to take the rook: 27. Qd5+ Kh8 28. Nf7+ Kg8 29. Nh6+ Kg8 30. Qg8 Rxg8 31. Nf7# (classic smothered mate) or if Kf8 Qf7# |
Mar-20-17 | | stst: Smothered by Q-sac:
28.Qg8+ RxQ (forced)
29.RxR# supported by N |
Mar-20-17 | | lost in space: No smothered mate this time on my beloved Monday. 28. Qg8+ Rxg8 (forced) 29. Rxg8# |
Mar-20-17 | | saturn2: Mate in 2 on g8 |
Mar-20-17 | | agb2002: White has a knight for a bishop.
Black threatens Rxe8 and Q(g)xh6.
White can deliver mate in two with 28.Qg8+ Rxg8 29.Rxg8#. |
Mar-20-17 | | sid299792: My first thought was Nf7+ QxN QxQ with mate to follow. But I guess Qg8+ works as well |
Mar-20-17 | | Kafelnikov64: Ayer 28. Nf7+,Kg8; 29. Nh6+,Kh8 we are back in the initial position. |
Mar-20-17 | | Geronimo: 24.Re8 is the really brutal move. Sad thing is, after 14.Na5 black probably chuckled "got this" to himself. |
Mar-20-17 | | radtop: The puzzle was simple. It was the journey getting there that was interesting. |
Mar-20-17 | | AlicesKnight: 28.Qg8+ with mate next move. Pretty variant on Philidor's legacy. <ChessHigherCat:> Doesn't 24....Rxe8; 25.Qb3+ lead to the mate faster? |
Mar-20-17 | | Infohunter: Philidor's Legacy run-up, finishing with an Arabian Mate. |
Mar-20-17 | | Once: <ChessHigherCat: 24. Re8!! is like some kind of supercomputer move. If 24...Rxe8 then the follow up most be 25. Nxc6 ....> There is a faster way. If black had played 24...Rxe8 click for larger view... white mates with 25. Qb3+. The finish would be something like this: 25. Qb3+ Re6 26. Qxe6+ Kh8 27. Nf7+ Kg8 28. Nxd8+ Kh8 29. Qe8+ Nf8 30. Qxf8# It's a fascinating game to play through. Black struggles with a common problem in the Dutch - it's not always easy to get your queenside pieces out. |

Mar-20-17 | | Abdel Irada: ∞
<<+> Rook at it like this: An X-ray spectacle <+>> At first glance, this resembles a classic smothered mate: Philidor's Legacy. (Or, as my late friend Don Gardiner used to call it, "Smothers Brothers.") But there are two differences:
<<+> 28. Qg8+, Rxg8 > Now here, in a PL, is where we'd triumphantly drop the knight on an undefended f7 with mate. But f7 *isn't* defended; the queen is watching it. (Difference #1.) However, this doesn't matter, because our rook was watching g8 through the rook on f8. (Difference #2.) Taking *on* f8 would have been pointless, because the queen defended. But on g8, the black rook is undefended, so: <<+> 29. Rxg8# > and Black is just as dead.
But what to call this mating pattern? A smothered Arabian? An Arabian Legacy? What would Don Gardiner say?

Mar-20-17 | | morfishine: <28.Qg8+> and whatever you want to call it, Black ends up smothered, much like chicken-fried steak, smothered in gravy ***** |
Mar-20-17 | | Abdel Irada: ∞
I've eaten chicken-fried steak *once*, when I was in the Navy on the USS Mars. The breaded coating tasted fine, but the texture of the meat inside resembled a Goodyear product. ∞ |
Mar-20-17 | | ChessHigherCat: <AlicesKnight>: Doesn't 24....Rxe8; 25.Qb3+ lead to the mate faster?>
Yes, as pointed out once by <AlicesKnight> and then twice by <Once>, 25. Qb3+ is faster, but you have to admit that White's disdain of taking either of the rooks en prise with 26. Qd5+ is pretty (or at least pretty anti-materialistic) |
Mar-20-17 | | LIzzard: Spent too much time on this wanting the smothered mate - sigh... |
Mar-20-17 | | RandomVisitor: I have a simple set of guidelines for solving the Monday puzzle: 1. Try to sacrifice the queen.
2. Try harder to sacrifice the queen.
3. Try to sacrifice a rook.
4. Try to sacrifice a bishop.
5. Try to sacrifice a knight.
I solved the puzzle when I got to step 2... |
Mar-20-17 | | TheTamale: Thanks to <ChessHigherCat> for explaining why Black doesn't just play 24) Rxe8. |
