 | | HeMateMe: the black pawns looked big time ugly. Many lost children. |
Apr-16-17 | | Mudphudder: Caruana is simply too streaky. He has good games but this is mixed too often by crappy games that are simply uncharacteristic of a 2800 player. I don't really see him as a world title contender. Not to discredit Yifan's win here at all b/c she also played a very splendid game here, well above her rating level. |
Apr-16-17 | | ChessHigherCat: So what, Caruana loses as black against a 2650 player. If every know-it-all who claimed bad play or a blunder had to show the winning line without resorting to stockfish, I bet there would be a lot fewer yelping patzers out there. |
Apr-16-17 | | Gilmoy: <Imran Iskandar: 15...Rf7 is inexplicable. Is a rook on f7 thematic in any lines in this opening?>
The only opening I can think of is King's Indian, with the full Bg7-Rf7-Bf8 dance to reinforce d6 and support the pawn storm on g/h. But maybe it works there <because> e is blocked. |
Apr-17-17 | | marcwordsmith: does anyone know why Caruana is skipping the Grand Prix? |
Apr-17-17 | | Bobby Fiske: The very top players have good reasons avoiding the present Grand Prix series:
*Uncertain schedule: When they sign up, they tie up their schedule, losing other possible tournament invitations. And it's not even sure all scheduled events will take place.
*Bad pay and bad play conditions.
The only carrot is that the top two winners gets seeded into the Candidates. Above is due to the messy state of FIDE organization and economy. |
Apr-17-17 | | marcwordsmith: Thank you, Mr. Fiske. Sad state of affairs indeed. And LOL, Blunderclap. |

Aug-21-17 | | Yeary: For those who wanna know how Yifan would take the rook and eventually mate: 40. ... Kg5 41. Qxg3+ Kh5 42. Rg8 Rg7 43. Rxg7 Rxg7 44. Qxg7 f545. Re3 Qg6 46. Rh3+ Kg4 47. Qe5 Kg5 48. f4+ Kg449. Qe2+ Kxf4 50. Qe3+ Kg4 51. Qg3# |
Dec-01-17 | | joddle: I think Caruana tried way too hard to win here. |

 | | al wazir: 32. b4 ?? You can't be serious.
Boy, did I miss this one. I was sure that the first two moves were 32. Bxf6 and 33. Bxh7+. |
Jan-25-19 | | lost in space: Not even close |
Jan-25-19 | | scholes: B4 is not a puzzle move. It's just a waiting move |
Jan-25-19 | | drollere: <It's just a waiting move> 32. Bb4 prevents Bc5 winning the exchange and guards the Qp. |
Jan-25-19 | | Count Wedgemore: <drollere> ...Bc5 wouldn't have necessarily won the exchange. White could safely get her queen and rook out of the pin by playing Rg3+, followed by moving away her queen. |
Jan-25-19 | | et1: May be Chess Games should contact some of the seasoned solvers like al wazir or lost in space for help. These puzzles are getting very weird, |
Jan-25-19 | | dTal: Omigosh. This is not a puzzle in any way that I understand the meaning. Weird game as well, Caruana seems to play himself into a horrible position thanks to some strange provocative moves. Black's moves look like one of my blitz games late at night when I want to win at all costs and get comfortably beaten as a consequence. |
Jan-25-19 | | Count Wedgemore: I agree with those who criticize this puzzle. b4 is a good move, but not a move that fits the "puzzle move" concept. |
Jan-25-19 | | catlover: I totally whiffed this puzzle. Didn't even get the first move. Must be Friday. Nicely played by Hou.
I wish she played baseball. Then we could say, "Hou's on first". |
Jan-25-19 | | Walter Glattke: Would win with 40.-Kg5 41.Rg8+ Rg7 42.Qxg3+ Kh6 43.Qh3+ Kg6 44.Re3 Rxg8 45.Qxd7 f5 46.Rg3+ |
Jan-25-19 | | The Kings Domain: The puzzle is a big "Huh?". Worst puzzle I've seen in the site. Fine win by the Chinese master. |
Jan-25-19 | | ChessHigherCat: There's obviously no one left who has the time/experience to pick the puzzles properly. I have no right to be generous with other people's resources, but I suggest giving one or two masters a multiyear CG membership in exchange for picking appropriate puzzles. What's a couple hundred bucks compared to resolving a major problem? Giving away memberships wouldn't even be money spent, just foregone income. |
Jan-25-19 | | ChessHigherCat: Whoops, my post got "Chris-Owened" |
Jan-25-19 | | agb2002: The d-pawn is tabu due to Bh2+ but White can increase the pressure with 32.Bb5, threatening Re8: A) 32... Bd7 33.Qxd5 wins a pawn.
B) 32... Be7 33.Rxe7 Rxe7 34.Rxe7 Qxe7 35.Bxf6
B.1) 35... Qe1+ 36.Kh2
B.1.a) 36... Rd6 37.Qf4 (37.Qc5 Qe6)
B.1.a.i) 37... Rxf6 38.Qxf6 wins a pawn.
B.1.a.ii) 37... Rb6 38.Qg5+ Kf7 (38... Kf8 39.Qg7#) 39.Qg7+ Ke6 40.Qe7+ Kf5 41.Qxe1 wins decisive material. B.1.a.iii) 37... Qe6 38.Qg7+ Kf7(8) 39.Qg7#.
B.1.a.iv) 37... Rd7 38.Bxd7 Bxd7 39.Qg5+ Kf7 (39... Kf8 40.Qg7+ Ke8 41.Qg8#) 40.Qg7+ Ke6 41.Qe7+ as above. B.1.b) 36... Rf8 37.Qxd5+
B.1.b.i) 37... Be6 38.Qg5+ Kf7 39.Qg7+ Ke8 40.Qe7#. B.1.b.ii) 37... Qe6 38.Qg5+ Kf7 39.Qg7#.
B.1.b.iii) 37... Rf7 38.Bc4 Qe8 39.Qg5+ Kf8 40.Qg7#. B.2) 35... Qc7(f8) 36.Bxd8 Qxd8 37.c4 Be6 38.cxd5 Qxd5 (38... Bxd5 39.Bc4 wins the bishop) 39.Qxd5 Bxd5 40.Bc4 Bxc4 41.bxc4 with a won pawn ending. C) 32... Be5 33.Rxe5 fxe5 34.Rxe5 seems to win material. For example, 34... Bd7 35.Rg5+ Rg7 36.Rxg7+ Qxg7 37.Qxd5+ Qf7 (else 38.Bxd8 wins a bishop) 38.Qg5+ followed by 39.Qxd8+ wins. |
Jan-25-19 | | agb2002: I missed 32... Bc5, forcing White to release pressure along the e-file with 33.Rg3+. With this detail in mind, 32.b4 becomes much clearer since Black seems to run out decent chances. |
