Jan-19-18  technical draw: Passed pawns must be pushed.

An Englishman: Good Morning: Funny how the simplification hasn't simplified anything.
Jan-19-18  ChessHigherCat: If Rf1 Qg1.
Jan-19-18  Marmot PFL: Black needs to win the other white panws and then advance his other pawns.
Jan-19-18  Caissanist: Adhiban goofed again, blew another pawn in an already lost position. If Mamedyarov can't win this, no way does he deserve his #2 ranking.
Jan-19-18  ChessHigherCat: Still Qg1, nicht wahr?
Jan-19-18  whiteshark: How to make progress an win the 'fortress'?

Going after ♙h5/♙f5 w/ Qh2/Qh3?

Jan-19-18  ChessHigherCat: Qh3 and if Kf7 Qh5+

An Englishman: Good Morning: Looking at 85...Qf7, and must admit did not expect to look at such a move at all.
Jan-19-18  ChessHigherCat: Qe2!! threatienng Qe7#
Jan-19-18  ChessHigherCat: Hey that guy's no good, he just steals all my moves!
Jan-19-18  ChessHigherCat: Unfortunately white has Qc1
Jan-19-18  ChessHigherCat: Stand up Adhiban,0-1

An Englishman: Good Morning: Quite a difficult fight for both players. 85...Qe2 was quite the effective finisher.
Jan-19-18  JimNorCal: Qe2 was indeed a shockingly swift destructor. Also key was to refrain from "winning" the f-pawn else white might benefit from the checking diagonal.
Jan-19-18  WorstPlayerEver: Hard to believe Adhi missed 45. Re3, whereafter Black might as well have resigned.

By the way, is it really necessary that the page jumps up and down before posting? It's beginning to annoy me.

Jan-19-18  Fanques Fair: White was winning, What would black play after 45-a7 ? He would have to sacrifice the exchange without sufficient compensation ...

that certainly parries ..h5, as 45.Re3 h5 46.Qf3 looks real nice for white. He WILL win that exchange on a7 with no comp. if ..46...Qc4 (threat Qc1+) 47.Qf1 and black is busted. But that's the nature of the game. Black got away with a swindle.

Jan-19-18  Swapmeet: What a game...such a pleasure to watch, just constantly blowing my mind.

It’s very easy to believe if you try to put yourself in his shoes, or just look at the game without an engine at your elbow. 45.Be3, which he played, looks murderous. 45.a7 looked great too, but for the clever refutation. He may have been overwhelmed by so many choices, or he may have thought there were multiple ways to win and he was picking the safest, or he may have been unsure whether he was winning or losing and thought he would do something sensible like get his bishop out of the way of his passed pawns.

And of course neither one of them was resigning anywhere around move 45, given the chances that both of them had.

Jan-20-18  ChessHigherCat: What's really hard to believe is not that these guys occasionally miss a move but that they so often find the optimal move over the board as confirmed by a supercomputer that runs through countless variations.
