GrahamClayton: Crowl's attempt to open the centre with 24. e4 is refuted by Shoebridge's 25...Rxf4, which results in a family fork by his knight after 26...Nd3 attacking all four of Crowl's pieces.

Yes, much better is 24.Nh5!

If the black rook retreats back to f8 he loses the knight.

30...Be6???

That has to be a mistake in the pgn. It can't be right.

The source for this game is "Anthony Wright, Australian Chess 1931 to 1948, Game 43" but 30...Be6 makes no sense. It just gives the game away. Especially since the response 31.Qe2 makes even less sense because the obvious 31.Qxe6+ wins immediately.

Anyway, white still could have saved the game with 39.e6 instead of 39.Rc1?

Shoebridge finished 4th in the 1932-33 Australian Championship on 9 points.

Crowl finished equal second along with William Viner on 10 points.

The winner was Garry Koshnitsky on 11 points.

Feb-22-23  optimal play: Okay, I've clarified the matter.

22...Rac8 is wrong

The move was actually 22...Rae8

The game continues until 29...d4

White then plays 30.Qc4+ and black responds with 30...Be6 which now makes perfect sense with the black rook on e8 instead of c8

My source for the correct pgn is the eminently reliable Ozbase.
