Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-11-20  MordimerChess: End of the game is full of inaccuracies and mistakes... and blunder at the end. That's because of seconds on the clock.

After Magnus played Qb7, there is an improvement for Ding 20. Nb3!
And then:
20...Bxe3 21. Qxe3 O-O 22. f5
20...Bxa3 21. bxa3 Nc3+ 22. Kb2 b4 23. axb4 Qxb4 24. Ra1

Once Ding didn't find it he had a chance to keep fighting after: 29. Rf2 Na4+ 30. Kb1 Qg6+ 31. Nf5 Kh7 32. Qf1∞

Well... pretty confident games by Magnus.

Aug-13-20  Ulhumbrus: Leko indicated that one reason why Ding Liren sometimes missed the right moves when playing under quickplay time controls so that the players were not given time to think was that he did not have as much experience as Carlsen in the positions arising out of these openings, so he missed the move 20 Nb3! leading to a win instead of to defeat. The move 20 c3 disturbs the pawn cover in front of the king without necessity and it overburdens the b pawn which then has to cover the c3 pawn as well as the a3 pawn and so it invites the sacrifice 20...Bxa3!
Aug-13-20  SChesshevsky: <Leko indicated that one reason why Ding sometimes missed the right moves...>

Think Leko was describing Ding's play against the Sicilian in general more than 20. Nb3 specifically. There appeared maybe a few time waster moves earlier where dropping even one tempo in the Sicilian can turn out badly.

Got the feeling that Carlsen also wasn't that comfortable in these Sicilian lines. Difference here might've been Carlsen probably has the best experience and instinct at busting up a vulnerable king.

Can see why Ding wouldn't want 20.Nb3. The N on d4 is probably a key piece if white is hoping for potential breakthroughs in the center king side. Backing it off likely just gets exchanges with if whites better, it's mainly due to the tempo on ...0-0.

Probably not enough in a situation where a win is needed and a couple of minutes on the clock. Might as well let black try to prove a breakthrough in short time. And if it is defendable or fizzles, maybe white has winning counter chances. Unfortunately, Carlsen is deadly precise in these kind of attacks.

Oct-03-20  posoo: fulishness. there ARE NO RITE MOOVES. Evry chess game is riddled with INACURACIES, even ur precius RUBKA-SNIFFERS!

Why elevate a game to such heights? Injoy DIS, da art of smashing, by two FOKES.
