An Englishman: Good Evening: Carlsen's Exchange sacrifice on move 30 creates a good fortress, but after 37.Qe4??, Black is given a easy mating attack.

Perhaps the time has come for the world to pay closer attention to the Antoshin Variation (3...exd4, 4...Nf6, 5...Be7). It might contain a bit more venom than it appears at first sight.

Sep-20-20  xanadu: By moves 10-11 it looks like a Caro Kan or a Sicilian game.
Sep-21-20  catlover: My limited experience with Philidor's Defence was that it was a solid, if somewhat passive, defence. There was nothing passive about the way Carlsen played this Philidor's.

Yeah, me too. Started goofing around with it maybe about a year ago. Found that I got what felt like a decent position but unless white really pushed was blocked around move 15 or so. Meaning had no real targets to aim at, no real breaks that didn't weaken myself, and still didn't feel like equalized.

But I never faced whites 0-0-0. Not sure if Dominguez Perez came up with this or if he's following someone? But it really changes the game.

Here looks like blacks dark squares B holds everything together. Maybe getting rid of that is necessary with white 0-0-0? CG computer seems to think so with lines that go for multiple exchanges in d6.

Wonder if we'll see 0-0-0 Philidor again?

Sep-22-20  beenthere240: 37. Qe4? is just a flat out blunder. Otherwise it's probably a draw.
Sep-22-20  fabelhaft: Mutual mistakes on consecutive moves there, with 36. ... Rb3 winning quickly for Carlsen.

Well, 36...Kh7 is a loss of time. 36...Rb3! 37.Qe4 Rxb2+ leads to a similar finish as in the game, and after 37.Qa6 the final can be 37...d3 38.Rh2 Qe4 39.Rhd2 (39.Rdd2 Rxb2+ 40.Rxb2 d2+ -+) 39...Bxb2! 40.Rxb2 Qe2 (diagram)

Sep-23-20  Everett: Just brutal. Carlsen’ s exchange sac makes his DSB that best minor piece on the board, easily equal to an opponent’s rook
