FSR: This sort of thing has become my favorite opening trap. See also F Rhine vs NN, 2020. The sacrifice 9.Bxh7+! is similar to Pillsbury vs V Eichorn, 1900, except that in my game Black has the extra move ...Nc6. Nonetheless, the sacrifice remains winning for White. I could have mated faster with 19.Qg5+! Ng6 20.Qh6.

Hi FSR,

This is my favourite Classical Bishop Sac Trap, caught loads with it a variation of it at Blitz, Rapid, RHP corres games and OTB in normal games.

https://www.redhotpawn.com/chess/ch...

The first time I played it in a league match I got quickly to here thinking this is won.

And my opponent played 12...Rh8. (the most popular move) Show that position to your chums after Rh8, see how many find the killer move.

It took a while (yes panic had set in ) but I eventually found OTB after dismissing all the other attractive looking moves 13.Nh7! as the cleanest win.

With mate threats on with Qg4 and Qh5. (did that too often when I played seriously, 'this looks good' only to get the 'looks good' bit and discovered it either looked bad, very bad and had to dive deep into the think tank to save a game. )

I went for it here G Chandler vs V Slaven, 1991 Then trying eek out a perpetual I found I had a mate! (I love it when a plan comes together.)

Williebob: My head is spinning from all these games with the bishop sac. There are times when I think that Black is lost after anything but 1.. Nf6!

Even with a Knight on f6 the Bishop sac can work.

<Williebob> Glad you liked it!

fredthebear: There's more to the story! This one is a double bishop sacrifice - not in the classical sense, but the g-pawn is removed nonetheless. Then the queen sacrifice to demolish the defender for promotion. Not bad!
