Stonehenge: Apparently 20. fxe4 loses to ...Qh4 but that's above my pay grade.
Jan-27-21  0ZeR0: In the interview with van Foreest after the game he said his decision to give up two pawns was not preparation. He was trying to be creative over the board. I really felt he had some serious compensation for his imaginative play. Shame it ended in a draw, but great stuff nonetheless.

Indeed, 20.fxe4 Qh4 21.exf5 Qxb4. White has no choice but to give up his queen here. If anything other than 21.exf5 is played white will get checkmated.

Jan-27-21  0ZeR0: Any improvements after 17.Qb4? 17...Ng5 seems interesting here offering another pawn. If 18.Bxc6 then 18...Rab8 19.Qa3 and white's position is in dire straits.
Jan-27-21  0ZeR0: Additionally after 23.Qf2 it appears black still has options for continuing the game with either 23...Bd3 or 23...Rb4.
Jan-27-21  0ZeR0: Any other comments for this wonderful game? Along with Caruana - Duda this is probably my favorite game of the tournament. Interesting that my two favorites both include Duda.

fredthebear: I appreciate your comments <0ZeR0>. You have kept us aware of current action. (I tend to look at older games, having long ago given up what is fashionable.)
Jan-27-21  0ZeR0: Thanks, <fredthebear>! I'm just really glad someone got something out of my comments.
Jan-28-21  SkySports: I was watching the game on chess.24, and I was actually surpirsed that neither the commentators or the chat gave the right relevance to this novelty. Anyway, I really thought it was preparation. I mean, how can you sacrifice two pawns just trying "to be creative"? Kudos to Jorden for his bravery...
Jan-28-21  0ZeR0: <SkySports>

That's an excellent point. I felt the same way. It seemed like the commentators assumed it was preparation, which makes sense. But even if it were, it would be fantastic preparation. But to play this purely over the board? That really left me in awe.

Jan-28-21  MordimerChess: One of my favourite freak opening specialist Jordeen van Foreest, in TATA Steel 2020 he played more craziness... now he's more solid but still - he proved that he can be extremely dangerous in unorthodox lines.

16...Rab8 17. Qc4 Nxf2 is extremely difficult to find but he had another chance with: 17. Ng5 variation...

Of course, there were plenty of crazy lines in the game which haven't been executed but still the most enjoyable game of round #10.
