Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-23-23  Brenin: 35 ... Rxg1+ 36 Kxg1 Ne2+ 37 Kh1 (37 Kf1 Bh3+ 38 Ng2 Bxg2+ 39 Ke1 Bxe3 40 fxe3 Nxc3, followed by Ne4 and advance of the f-pawn) Bxe3 38 fxe3 Be4 as in the game.
Sep-23-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: Again, I felt like have seen this game before. I doubt that Marshall hadn't play 35...Rxg1+, cause it explode in our eyes and he is a tactical player. 36. Kxg1 Ne2+ 37. Kf1 Bh3+ 38. Ng2 Bxg2+ 39. Ke1 Bxe3 40. fxe3 Nxc3 41. Rc1 Ne4 and W is lost and hopeless.

I like this type of situations: e.g. 42. Rc2 d5 43. Rb2 c6 44. Rc2 a6 45. Rb2 Kc7 46. Rc2 Bh3 47. Rb2 c3 48. Rc2 Bf5 49. Ra2 Nf6 50. Rf2 Be4 51. h3 c2 52. Kd2 Nh7 53. Kc1 Ng5 54. Kd2 Nxh3 55. Rh2 f2 56. Rh1 Ng1 57. Rxh4 f1=Q game over.

The beautiful continuation is 37. Kh1 Bxe3 38. fxe3 Be4 39. h3 f2+ 40. Kh2?? f1=N#.

The W try to escape is interesting: Bxe3 38. Nxf3! Be4 (39. h3? Bxf3+ 40. Kh2 Bf4#). 39. Kg2 Nf4+ 40. Kg1 Bxf3 41. Re1 Nh3+ 42. Kf1

Now, I didn't like Bxf2 43. Re8+ Kd7 44. Rf8 Bg4 45. d5 where B pieces become unconnected. Instead, the correct move is: 45... Bd2 43. Re8+ Kb7 44. b5 Nf4 45. Rh8 Bg2+ 46. Kg1 h3 47. Re8 Bxc3 and W position is again destroyed step by step calmly.

Sep-23-23  mel gibson: I saw the first 4 plies within 10 seconds.

Stockfish 16 says:

35. Be3 Rxg1+

(35. .. Rxg1+ (Rg8xg1+ Kf1xg1 Nf4-e2+ Kg1-h1 Bh6xe3 Ne1xf3 Bf5-e4 Kh1-g2 Ne2xc3 Rd1-e1 Be3-d2 Re1xe4 Nc3xe4 d4-d5 Bd2xb4 a5-a6 Ne4-f6 Kg2-f1 c4-c3 Nf3-e1 ) +8.98/44 544)

score for Black +8.98 depth 44.

When I put SF into auto-play at 2 seconds per ply it quickly led to a checkmate. Black won easily.

Sep-23-23  Mayankk: For some reason the first few moves. flashed immediately in front of me although I don't recall seeing this combination before.

Black's primary goal seems to be clearing the lines for its f3 pawn to promote. We force it by 35 ... Rxg1+ 36 Kxg1 Ne2+ 37 Kh1 (37 Kf1 Bh3+ is worse ) Bxe3 (the main point of Rook sac) 38 fxe3.

Here I became distracted by 38 ... f2 first, thinking 39 Ng2 Be4 40 Rf1 h3 should win. However 38 ... Be4 and then 39 ... f2+ is clearly better. Move order is the key.
