John Saunders: There's a serious error in the score here.

For the record, this is the score given here (and on CB's databases and BritBase) as at today's date. I have highlighted the error - 11...0-0 - in reality Black castled queenside): 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Ne7 7. a4 Nbc6 8. Nf3 Qa5 9. Bd2 Bd7 10. Be2 c4 11. O-O <O-O> 12. Ng5 Rac8 13. Bg4 h6 14. Nf3 f5 15. exf6 Rxf6 16. Qe2 Ng6 17. g3 Rcf8 18. Ne5 Ngxe5 19. dxe5 R6f7 20. f4 g6 21. Bh3 Rh7 22. Rfb1 Nd8 23. Rb4 Bc6 24. Be3 b6 25. Bd4 h5 26. Qe3 Rb7 27. Qc1 Bd7 28. Qa3 Re8 29. Rab1 Qa6 30. Be3 Kg7 31. Ra1 Rf8 32. Rbb1 Nf7 33. Bd4 Rc7 34. Bg2 Bc6 35. Bf3 Nh6 36. a5 b5 37. Kg2 Nf5 38. Qb4 Bd7 39. Kf2 Bc6 40. Rg1 Rh8 41. Ke2 Kg8 42. Raf1 Bb7 43. Rb1 Bc6 44. Kd2 Qc8 45. Kc1 Be8 46. Bf2 Bd7 47. Kb2 Qf8 48. Rbf1 a6 49. h3 Bc8 50. g4 hxg4 51. hxg4 Ng7 52. Rh1 Qxb4+ 53. cxb4 Rxh1 54. Rxh1 Rf7 55. Bg3 Rb7 56. Rh6 g5 57. f5 Bd7 58. f6 Ne8 59. Kc3 Bc6 60. Kd4 Kf8 61. c3 Bd7 62. Bd1 Kf7 63. Bc2 1-0

In order to make the above incorrect score work, it is not surprising that the inputter ran into a few problems along the way, though I'm amazed that there weren't more over the course of a long game, and that the resultant score was still plausible enough to have survived decades without anyone noticing. (CB digitised it in 1998 - and one should also bear in mind that Spassky was and is a very high profile player on the brink of playing his first world championship match.) An example of the problems faced by the inputter: 30...K-N1 appeared in the score - his wrongly castled black king was already on that square (g8) so he must have punted 30...Kg7. In reality the king was on c8 so the move 30...K-N1 in the magazine turns out to be perfectly correct (...Kb8).

I checked CHESS Magazine, January 1966, Vol.31/498-9 (which appears to be the sole primary source) and it shows that <Black castled queenside on move 11>. It is quite remarkable that this significant difference didn't manifest itself and derail the original inputting process at an early stage, as such major scoring errors tend to. Anyway, here is the corrected score (or at least a version of the score that is likely to be correct: the score given in the magazine includes two ambiguities which cannot be definitively resolved): 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Ne7 7. a4 Nbc6 8. Nf3 Qa5 9. Bd2 Bd7 10. Be2 c4 11. O-O O-O-O 12. Ng5 Rdf8 13. Bg4 h6 14. Nf3 f5 15. exf6 Rxf6 16. Qe2 Ng6 17. g3 Rhf8 18. Ne5 Ngxe5 19. dxe5 R6f7 20. f4 g6 21. Bh3 Rh7 22. Rfb1 Nd8 23. Rb4 Bc6 24. Be3 b6 25. Bd4 h5 26. Qe3 Rb7 27. Qc1 Bd7 28. Qa3 Re8 29. Rab1 Qa6 30. Be3 Kb8 31. Ra1 Ka8 32. Rbb1 Nf7 33. Bd4 Rc7 34. Bg2 Bc6 35. Bf3 Nh6 36. a5 b5 37. Kg2 Nf5 38. Qb4 Bd7 39. Kf2 Bc6 40. Rg1 Rh8 41. Ke2 Kb8 42. Raf1 Bb7 43. Rb1 Bc6 44. Kd2 Qc8 45. Kc1 Be8 46. Bf2 Bd7 47. Kb2 Qf8 48. Rbf1 a6 49. h3 Bc8 50. g4 hxg4 51. hxg4 Ng7 52. Rh1 Qxb4+ 53. cxb4 Rxh1 54. Rxh1 Rf7 55. Bg3 Kb7 56. Rh6 g5 57. f5 Bd7 58. f6 Ne8 59. Kc3 Bc6 60. Kd4 Kc8 61. c3 Bd7 62. Bd1 Kb7 63. Bc2 Kc6 64. Be1 1-0

The residual ambiguities in the magazine score are 48 R(N1)-KB1 (an amusing failure to resolve the ambiguity since the rooks are both on N1 squares, b1 and g1) and 63 B-B2 which could be either Bc2 or Bf2. I've not been able to trace any other primary sources to help resolve the ambiguities.
