Jul-08-21 | | sudoplatov: Surprisingly easy for me this time (I miss most of these no matter the level.) I think the clue is the restricted King and the removal of the guard for f6. |

Jul-08-21 | | agb2002: White has a rook for a bishop and two pawns.
White can attack the black king with 32.Qxf7+ Kxf7 33.Rxf6+: A) 33... Ke8 34.Rf8+ Kd7 35.R1f7+ Kxc6 (35... Ke6 36.Re7#) 36.Rc8+ Qc7 37.Rcxc7+ Kb6 38.Rxb7+ wins. B) 33... Kg8 34.Rf8+ Kg(h)7 35.R1f7+ Kh6 36.Rh8#. C) 33... Kg7 34.Rf7+ Kh6 (34... Kg(h)8 35.Rf8+ as in B) 35.Ne7 (threatens Ng8#) C.1) 34... Qd8 35.R1f6, with the threat 37.Rxg6#, wins decisive material. C.2) 34... g5 35.R1f6#.
C.3) 34... Bg1+ 35.Kh1 doesn't improve anything for Black. |

Jul-08-21 | | drollere: this one was not hard even for me. after 32. Qxf7+ Kxf7, 33. Rxf6+ black loses both Q and N if the K flees to the left: Ke8, 34. Rf8+ Kd7, 35. R1f7+ Kxc6, 36. Rc8+ Qc7, 37. Rcxc7+ Kb6, 38. Rxb7+ ... on the right there is 33. .. Kg7, 34. Rf7+ Kh6, 35. Ne7 Qd8, 36. R1f6 or 33. .. Kg8, 34. Ne7+ Kh8, 35. Rf8+ Kg7, 36. R1f7+ Kh6 |

Jul-08-21 | | TheBish: White to play (32.?) "Medium"
The only candidate move that seemed to go anywhere is the queen sacrifice, which at least allows the rooks to break through, even if there was no immediate mate. The hard part is the followup! Overall I would rate this at least a Friday (difficult) puzzle, as I normally solve Thursday (medium) puzzles a little more quickly. But the lack of good candidate moves helps. 32. Qxf7+!! Kxf7 33. Rxf6+ and now:
(a) 33...Ke8 34. Rf8+ Kd7 35. R1f7+! (this move took me a while to see, not immediately seeing the easy continuation, and looking at Nb8+ instead) 35...Kxc6 (or 35...Ke6 36. Re7#) 36. Rc8+ Qc7 37. Rcxc7+ Kb6 38. Rxb7+ Ka6 39. Rd7 and wins. (b) 33...Kg8 34. Rf8+ Kg7(h7) 35. R1f7+ Kh6 36. Rh8#. (c) 33...Kg7 34. Rf7+ Kh6 (34...Kg8/h8 35. Rf8+ mates in 2 more as in line b) 35. Ne7 Qd8 (threat was Ng8#, and if 35...g5 36. R1f6#) 36. R1f6, and Black will have to sac the queen to stop Rxg6#, i.e. 36...Qxe7 37. Rxe7 with a complete crush, up two exchanges with the knight falling after 37...Nd7 38. Rxd6 (or 38...Bb6 39. Rxb6). |

 | | olinart: I looked at 32. Qe6
If Qxc6 there are Q+R mates quickly eg
33. Rxf6 Nd8 34. Rxg6+ Kh7 35. Rxf7+ Nxf7 36. Qxf7+
refusing the N
32. Qe6 Nd8 33. Nxd8 Qxd8 34. Rxe3
a full R up.
Not as elegant as the game play. |

Jul-08-21 | | Brenin: 31 ... h5 was clearly a mistake: 31 ... Qc7 would have prevented the Q sac. However, could White have played it a move earlier? After 31 Qxf7+ Kxf7 32 Rxf6+ Black has the defence 32 ... Kg7 33 Rf7+ Kh8 34 Rf8+ Kg7 35 R1f7+ Kh6 36 Ne7 Bg5 37 hxg5+ Kxg5 38 Rxh7 Qd4 39 Rg7 Qxe4+, and White has to avoid perpetual check. |
|
Jul-08-21 | | Lambda: I got distracted by a nice idea that doesn't quite work: 32. Rxf6? Rxf6 33. Ne7 Qd8 34. Qxb7 Rxf1 and I thought 35. Nc6+ was just picking up the queen for free, but 35...Rf7 attacks the white queen. |
|
Jul-08-21 | | TheaN: I would have played this, but missed the rather 'simple' <32.Qxf7+ Kxf7 33.Rxf6+ Kg7> given that now White doesn't have the tempo to put both rooks in the position. <34.Rf7+ Kh6 35.Ne7 +-> is an easy line, but a bit sloppy. The other way is way easier and I noticed that near instantly, as it's forced in full: 33....Ke8 34.Rf8+ Kd7 35.R1f7+ Kxc6 36.Rc8+ +-. Going to g8 is fatal in all variants 33....Kg8 34.Rf8+ with 35.R1f7+ Kh6 36.Rh8#. |

Jul-08-21 | | Cellist: I figured out the game line after deciding that 33. ... Ke8 was the best defense for Black. I saw that 33. ... Kg8 or h8 would lead to a quick mate, and I thought 33. ... Kg7 would also lead to mate soon. The problem is that I wanted to double the rooks on the 7th rank in case the King fled to h6 (34. Rf7+ Kh6 35. Re7), but that does decisively fail to 35. ... Bf2. Hopefully I would have seen this in a real game, but luckily for me the defender played Ke8! |

Jul-08-21 | | johnnydeep: The queen sac was obviously the puzzle solution, followed by the rook attack, but had the black king moved *away* from the white knight instead of toward it, he could have lasted longer (the engine says mate in 24 after 33...Kg7) |

|
Jul-08-21 | | drollere: <the engine says mate in 24 after 33...Kg7.> only if the K flees to h6, and black gives up the Q for N exchange. then the two R's take a while to clear away the rubble. |
|
Jul-08-21 | | AlicesKnight: Saw the Q-sac fairly quickly and was surprised to see how rapidly effective it was. |
|
Jul-09-21 | | Brenin: My suggested 31 ... Qc7 as an improvement on 31 ... h5? is also a mistake: it leaves the B on e3 and the P on b5 both en prise. Better would be 31 ... Bh6, deterring the Q sac 32 Qxf7+ by keeping an eye on f8 to prevent an eventual Rf8+. However, Black is running out of plausible moves (Qa6-b6?), and can do nothing constructive while White improves his position. |
