GrahamClayton: La Rota's piece sacrifice with 12. de6 is fully justified, as Valvo's king and underdeveloped pieces cannot defend against La Rota's developed pieces operating on the central open files.
Nov-19-23  mel gibson: It's too balanced -
it's close to a draw.

Stockfish 16 says:

12. dxe6

(12. dxe6 (d5xe6 f7xe6 Qd1xd8 Be7xd8 Bc4xe6+ Bc8xe6 Re1xe6 Bd8-f6 Bf4-e5 Kg8-f7 Re6xe8 Ra8xe8 Nb5-d6+ Kf7-g6 Nd6xe8 Rf8xe8 Be5xf6 Kg6xf6 Nf3-d2 Kf6-g6 Kg1-f1 ) +1.45/60 1171)

score for White +1.45 depth 60.

Nov-19-23  Brenin: 12 dxe6 is not hard to see, but the many variations need plenty of analysis. Here is just one line: 12 ... Nxc4 13 exf7+ Kxf7 13 Qe2 Nxb2 14 Rad1 Nxd1 15 Qc4+ Kg6 16 Re6+ Bxe6? (Nf6 is better) 17 Qxe6+ Nf6 (or Bf6 or Rf6) 18 Ne5+ Kh5 19 Qh3 mate.
Nov-19-23  raymondhow: Got the first four moves, then went for 16.b3 which the engine likes better than the game move.

scormus: Wasn't sure abut this,12 dxe6 or d6. The text moves didn't look decisive to me after ... fxe6. But I wasn't expecting B to allow 13 exf7+. After that W is definitely in the diver's seat, although there are alternative moves for both players and I didn't get all of them "correct".

Some satisfaction that <mel/SF> confirmed it wasn't decisive. I'll check 12 d6 with it to see what that brings.

Nov-19-23  whiteshark: So in the end the best line is to win a pawn ?!

  scormus: According to SF14, the losing move was 12 ... Nxc4 allowing 13 exf7+ etc. (ca. +4.2 to W).

After 12 d6, SF continues ... Bf6 13 Qe2 Bd7 14 Nc7 Rc8 15 Bd3 c4 16 Be4 is fairly balanced (ca. +0.7 to W). If 12 ... Nxc4 W gives up a pawn but gets some pressure: 13 dxe7 Qxe7 14 Qd3 Nb6 15 Ng5 g6 16 Qg3 (ca. +1.2) a fairly similar eval to the <mel/SF> line.

The crucial point about 12 dxe6! is that it gives B the opportunity to make a game losing mistake, which 12 d6?! doesn't do.

Nov-19-23  alshatranji: I didn't quite get this one. I didn't think Black would capture with the king at 13, since after 13...Rxf7, I saw 14.Qxd8 Bxd8 15.Rxe8+ Rf8 16.Rxf8+ Kxf8, which doesn't seem to take White anywhere. However, Stockfish says this variation gives White a +2.24 advantage. Mainly strategic apparently. So capturing with the king is the right move. After Q.e2, the right response was Nxb2 (Stockfish). So Nd6 was a mistake, as was Bf5. I admit most of this stuff is over my head.
Nov-20-23  Granny O Doul: When I first joined ICC in 1995, LaRota was one of my most frequent opponents. Valvo was only occasional, as he would typically noplay me after losing (though only temporarily). I'm pretty sure I wasn't special in this regard.
