Check out White's 10th move!

fredthebear: <White's 10th move> is shocking, but necessary to unpin, yet defend. Castling would lose the king as a defender and drop the pinned knight. White breaks the pin w/10.Ke2 and seizes the initiative thereafter. 10.a3 is recommended, but future generations can (and will) follow Carlsen's path if they wish.

7.c3 was tried in an Under 16 game here: Baklan vs Leko, 1994 Otherwise, we're in uncharted territory in this database.

Black has trouble getting the "French bishop" activated, as it must wait until 29.Bb7 (and never leaves). By then, White has a passed c-pawn and is ready to trade down to a won endgame.

Dionysius1: 10.Ke2 looks like a good choice. Loses castling for a few powerful moves which gives him great control of the board. In Carlsen's hands that looks frightening :-)

Check It Out: I dont understand how Duda could even consider 24...f5, giving up his center pawn (with check!)

Check It Out: He got some control over the e-file by giving up that pawn, but no serious threat, then Carlsen snacked on some more tasty pawns and it was over.

Not saying it was a good idea, but Duda was desperate. He was giving draw odds in effect, plus it is hard for him to develop normally, e.g. 24.Nf6 loses immediately to 25.Qd4.
