Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-28-21  Brenin: 24 ... Rxh2 (threat 25 ... Rh1 mate) 25 Kxh2 (25 Nxe4 Rh1+ 26 Kxg2 Rxc1 27 Qxc1 dxe4 wins a piece) Qh8+ 26 Kg3 (Kg1 Qh1 mate) Qg7+ 27 Kh2 Qh6+ 28 Kg3 Qg5+ 29 Kh3 (29 Kh2 Qh4+ 30 Kg1 Qh1 mate) Bf5+ 30 Kh2 g1=Q+ 31 Rxg1 Qh4+ 32 Kg2 Qh3 mate.
Nov-28-21  mel gibson: That was very easy - it must have been a Tuesday puzzle on a Sunday?

Stockfish 14 says mate in 12.

24... Rxh2

(24. .. Rxh2 (♖h8xh2
f2-f3 ♕d8-h8 f3xe4 ♕h8-h3 ♘d2-f3 ♖h2-h1+ ♔g1-f2 ♖h1-f1+ ♔f2-e2 ♕h3xf3+ ♔e2-d3 ♕f3xe4+ ♔d3-e2 g2-g1♕ ♕c6xe6+ ♕e4xe6 ♖c1xf1 ♕e6xe3+ ♔e2-d1 ♕g1xf1+ ♔d1-c2 ♕e3-d3+) +M12/58 26)

Nov-28-21  Brenin: I overlooked the Stockfish reply 25 f3, found by <mel gibson>.

Earlier, if White replies to 22 ... hxg2 with 23 Kxg2 rather than 23 Rc1, then 23 ... Qg8+ 24 Bg3 Be4, followed by Qh7, looks very strong for Black.

Nov-28-21  Granny O Doul: As the Stockfish reply 25. f3 is the equivalent of resignation, I wouldn't sweat having overlooked it.

  Dionysius1: I like the Qh8+ Qg7+ Qh6+ Qg5+ to get her into effective range.

A lot of manoeuvres in chess have names - does that?

al wazir: Easy. The first six moves just play themselves. After that the ♙ promotion and capture by the ♖ limits the white ♔'s freedom.

I saw that much in advance, though I didn't see the final combination. But I figured that the ♕ and ♗ working together could mate. They can.

I would have confidently played this line OTB. It's perfectly safe, since black is sure of at least a perpetual check.

Nov-28-21  nalinw: Good question <Dionysius1> - does anyone know if there is a name for that zig-zag manouvre of the Queen? I remembered it from endgames where a Queen is trying to prevent a pwan queening.

And I agree - a Wednesday or Thursday puzzle at the most

An Englishman: Good Evening: Too easy for a Sunday--in other words, solved it. Still, 6.5/7 weeks (didn't see all of Friday's solution) cannot be taken for granted.
Nov-28-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: I stopped after seeing 26 ... Qh1, which also wins big.
Nov-28-21  agb2002: Black has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight.

White threatens Nxe4.

The first idea that comes to mind is 24... Rxh2:

A) 25.Kxh2 Qh8+ 26.Kg3 (26.Kh1 Qh1#) 26... Qg7+ 27.Kh2(3) (27.Kf4 Qg5#; 27.Kh4 Qg5+ as in the main line) 27... Qh6+ 28.Kg3 Qg5+ 29.Kh3 (29.Kh2 Qh4+ 30.Kg1 Qh1#) 29... Bf5+ 30.Kh2 g1=Q+ 31.Rxg1 Qh4+ 32.Kg2 Qh3#.

B) 25.Nxe4 Qh8

B.1) 26.Ng3 Qh3 27.f3(4) (due to 27... Rh1+ and mate next) 27... Qxg3 and mate soon.

B.2) 26.f3 Rh1+ 27.Kf2 (27.Kxg2 Qh2#) 27... Qh2 is winning.

B.3) 26.f4 Rh1+

B.3.a) 27.Kxg7 Qh3+ 28.Kf2 Rh2+ 29.Ke1 (29.Kg1 Qg2#) 29... Qxe3+ and mate in two.

B.3.b) 27.Kf2 Qh2 is winning (28.Nd6+ Bxd6 29.Qxd7+ Be7).

C) 25.f3 Rh1+ 26.Kxg7 Rxc1 wins a piece for a pawn.

Nov-28-21  Lambda: I don't normally get anywhere near Sundays, but that one was easy. You have to briefly consider 25.Nxe4 and 25.f3 too, but even just 25...Rh1+ in both cases leads easily to a decisive material advantage, even if you don't continue the attack with 25...Qh8.
Nov-28-21  parch: First move, 24...R:h2 Black has three options 25.N:e4, 25.f3, and 25.K:h2

Gone for 25.N:e4 Qh8 26.Nd6+ Kg6 27.Qc2+ f5
28.f4 Rh1+ 29.Kf2 Qh2 30.Kf3 Rf1+ (30...g1/N+ ) wins.

Nov-28-21  drollere: i had 24. .. Rxh2, 25. Kxh2 Qh8+, 26. Kg3 Qg7+, 27. Kh2 Qh6+, 28. Kg3 Qg5+, 29. Kh3 Bf5+, 30. Kh2 g1=Q+, 31. Rxg1 Qh4+, 32. Kg2 Qh3# . move 30 was not obvious at move 25.

Nov-28-21  Ja Dood: In reply to Dionysius1 and nalinw, I have heard that manoeuvre called "going up stairs". A nice image.
Nov-28-21  johnnydeep: Almost plays itself. The diagonal advance of the black queen was a nice tactic!
