<McConnell notebook, game 10 (Tulane University)>

I'm not sure if the notebooks have been made available by Tulane.

Feb-13-23  YandyRB: Hello, thanks for the guidance. I introduce myself, I am Yandy Rojas, from Cuba. I have relied on Chessgames for a long time, although without registering. In historical matters I have collaborated with Edward Winter, Olimpiu Urcan, Rod Edward, Miguel Á. Sanchez and Jesus G. Bayolo. I am currently working on a project about Capablanca and the Corzo brothers. I even believe that some of the games between Capablanca and Juan Corzo from 1909 found here have been taken from Chess Notes, and in that case you can see that it is my collaboration. I have registered to be able to interact. I don't wander, I investigate. The game of Juan Corzo vs. James McConnell Jr. is very interesting for several reasons: first, the game is not in the Chessbase Megabase, second, Vázquez in 1900 and the ACB in 1912 give results vs. Farrar, Buck, Labatt and Wilcox, but not vs. McConnell, and third, from the previous series no games are known, while this one with McConnell is. I reiterate my thanks and I hope to continue interacting and learning.

Not surprising. I'm the person who uploaded the game to this website. It came to me by way of John Paul Phillips many years ago: http://www.chessarch.com/archive/00...

I'm not sure Vázquez was even aware of Corzo's brief visit to New Orleans in 1899. I wasn't even aware of his visit until I did some digging and discovered:

<Visiting Newspaper Men.

They Will Board a Boat and Take Part in the Rex Parade.

A number of visiting newspaper men who came to New Orleans at the invitation of the Press Club, yesterday visited the club and registered. Those who added their signatures to the already large list are as follows: [...] Guan Corzo, La Universale Espaniole, Havana; Aniceto Valdivia, La Lucha, Havana.>

I don't think they are available online, but they are available to be seen by visiting scholars.

Feb-14-23  YandyRB: Hello Nick Pope, Vázquez did know about J. Corzo's visit to New Orleans: “(…) venció a Farrar y a Buck, haciendo un score de 2 contra 2, con los maestros Labbat y Wilcox.” (El Fígaro, February 11, 1900, p.68) The article was inserted with some tweaks in Ajedrez Magistral, Vol. II, p.39. Translation: "(...) he beat Farrar and Buck, making a score of 2 against 2, with the masters Labbat and Wilcox." I read the John Paul Phillips article recently, I think last December, and I saw the game with Steinitz. I tried to contact him or you to inquire about possible games with Juan Corzo but could not find contact details on the website. I was hoping that he would publish part 2, part 3, etc. I have been consulting Chess Archaeology for a long time too. I remember that in 2019 I found other evidence about the game between McDonnell and de La Bourdonnais of which there are doubts about who started it and I could not contact you. Are you interested? I have also been reading your latest books on Pillsbury, especially volume 2, his visit to Havana. I knew the match games, but very few blindfold games, I didn't know, for example, the game with Gavilán. I have referenced it in my project. I tell you that A. R. Gavilán usually confuses between Arturo Dionisio de los Reyes Gavilán and Antonio de los Reyes Gavilán. The difference is sometimes in the social treatment: both were addressed as Sr. Gavilán or Don Gavilán, but only Antonio was addressed as Dr. Gavilán. According to the Diario de la Marina it was Dr. Gavilán who played with Pillsbury, that is, Antonio. I hope to find other Pillsbury exhibition games in Havana in other newspapers like La Lucha and La Discusión. If I find something and you're interested, just tell me.

I wish I had more to offer, but the only Corzo games I have in my database are the match games against Vázquez and then the two McConnell,Jr and Pillsbury games.

Definitely.

<Dr. Antonio de los Reyes Gavilán>

Thank you for that piece of information.

<I hope to find other Pillsbury exhibition games in Havana in other newspapers like La Lucha and La Discusión. If I find something and you're interested, just tell me.>

I am always interested in any Pillsbury discoveries. In particular, if you find the dates to his simultaneous and blindfold simultaneous performances I would be very grateful to have that information.

You can send me an initial email to my yahoo.com account, user gifflefunk. It's a burner email account that I use to catch SPAM, etc. If you send me an email just let me know by posting something in my forum, User: jnpope, so I know to look for it. I will then reply from my primary email account thereafter.

And you can always post any information in my CG forum regarding McDonnell and de La Bourdonnais or Pillsbury.
