perfidious: Perhaps White might have tried something active and not acquiesced in the repetition instead....

Clement Fraud: Esipenko has beaten Carlsen in the past, and I find it disappointing that Andrey didn't bother to try this time.
Jan-16-22  Atking: I imagine easily that Spassky in his youth would have tried 16...d4!? What comp says about?
Jan-16-22  El Culco: White is Chicken...and these new young generation of players are boring.

Check It Out: My theory is that, with the 2900 goal in mind, Carlsen is changing his approach; rather than drag every game out, he's taking the quick draws when they present to conserve energy. He tends to start slow so an easy draw as black in rd 1 makes sense.

Clement Fraud: Thus far in the tournament - January 21 - Magnus has played only once against 1.d4 with the black pieces; I can't help wondering what M.C. might have tried if Esipenko had attempted the Anti Meran variation (5.Bg5)?

I thought that computer research had all but refuted the Semi Slav Defense (by analyzing Anti Meran to almost a forced win for White). I would dearly love to find out if Magnus has made discoveries, developed new concepts to revolutionize the opening for the second player.
