Mar-06-22  Ulhumbrus: Instead of 24...Qxd7, 24...Bh6 seems consistent, threatening 25...Bxe3 removing the defender of g2, and what is White going to do about it?
Mar-06-22  electrocloud: <Ulhumbrus> 25. Bd4+ Bg7 26.Bxg7+ Kxg7 27.Rc7 seems to be easily winning. Also 26.Qd5 with 27.Rc7 following
Mar-07-22  virginmind: Ouch! Considering white missed 31.Bxd8...
Mar-07-22  Ulhumbrus: < electrocloud: <Ulhumbrus> 25. Bd4+ Bg7 26.Bxg7+ Kxg7 27.Rc7 seems to be easily winning. Also 26.Qd5 with 27.Rc7 following> In that case Black must seek an alternative. One alternative is 24...h5 eg 25 Rc7 Rad8 26 Ra1-c1 Bh6 27 Bd4+ Kh7. Now Black threatens again ...Bxe3

<Ulhumbrus> I too was wondering about the viability of 24...h5. This is what Stockfish 12 gives at a depth of 28.

Mar-08-22  actinia: Great game, fun to play through
Mar-08-22  Ulhumbrus: <LoveThatJoker> In this variation 30 Qd7 ends the attack.

If Black simply has not the time to attack g2 successfully and so the attack fails he has to look for an alternative before it begins.

This suggests a question: To which move should Black seek an alternative?

One answer is this: Perhaps Black should look for a move that makes a concession to White, a concession that Black makes to White in order to start the attack.

One example of a concession is 16..e4 and one alternative is 16...f5.

Now suppose that after 16...f5 instead of 16...e4 White proceeds as in the game: 17 c5 f4 and we see already one difference: White has not played cxd6 yet and so has no time for Bb6.

This suggests that the concession 16...e4 gives White a tempo for the capture 18 cxd6 clearing the way for White's bishop on e3 to go to b6.

Mar-08-22  LoveThatJoker: <Ulhumbrus> I will have to take your word for it, man. I really wasn't looking for overly deep meaning in the position. But I most definitely appreciate you sharing this with me.

Mar-12-22  cocker: In another version the game ends 29 R x c8 R x c8 30 Bc3, 1-0. 29 Rc2 seems extraordinary.

HeMateMe: Nice to see shirov pick up a win, demonstrate how to play against a finchettoed position when the bishop file pawn has advanced. Fedosev had no pawn cover.
