  Check It Out: Not a great game by Caruana. He lost the thread around move 28.
Aug-06-22  Noah Parking: Huge ratings upset.
Aug-06-22  fabelhaft: Gukesh wanted the repetition draw after move 27, given how it looked at the other boards, while Caruana couldn’t afford going for the draw but had to try to win.

  tamar: Winning pushed Gukesh to 2729, and Caruana fell to 2753.

Caruana = 2783, Gukesh = 2684.

A hundred point difference. I would say that's not a <huge> upset. How about at least 200 for a <huge> upset?

Other opinions?

  tamar: It would have been huge two months ago, but Gukesh has gained 50 points or more and Caruana has fallen 20 or more.
Aug-06-22  fisayo123: Beautiful game with the black pieces by Gukesh!

  tamar: Now a really huge upset would be Gukesh 2283 versus Caruana 2766. Those are their Rapid Ratings

Caruana effectively refused a draw on move 28, and then the position turned in Gukesh's favor.

Absolutely, Fabi Less.

That's really unfortunate and it's the last thing Fabiano needs right now. Since it seems trying to force an advantage when it's not called for OTB looks a reason for his lousy results since half way through the candidates.

Wouldn't be surprised if something away from the board has also contributed to the quality decline. Think the way to right the ship is to play as principled as possible and avoid complications unless clearly seeing the plus. If that's 20 draws in a row, so be it. At least until Fabiano can again feel and accept what the board is best offering.

I think Caruana was really disturbed by Magnus' decision to not play the WC match next year. Fabi seemed to try to force matters in the candidates in order to catch Nepo, which backfired and cost him 2nd place.

If he had gone into "solid mode" when he had 2nd place in his hands he probably would have finished ahead of Ding. Then seeing Ding in the WC match when it could have been himself maybe has Fabi feeling gutted.

I really have a lot of sympathy for the guy, even though my GOTD pun comes at his expense. Fabi comes across as a likeable and honorable fellow, a very classy sportsman. The way the chess WC situation turned out for him in this cycle is disappointing, to say the least.

Aug-26-22  Saniyat24: That pun just doesn't sound right...!
Aug-26-22  Kristijanf: _<al vazir> because black have a forced checkmate

The way this kid has been on fire lately I don't think the difference in actual strength is a great as the ratings seem to indicate. For Fabby, it's been a rough year; like Magnus, he may need a rest.
