Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-27-23  Brenin: I got this by elimination, rather than insight: with mate on g2 threatened, White needs to keep delivering checks while driving the Black K into the open, and only 40 Qh8+ Kf7 41 Re7+ Rxe7 42 Qh7+ Kf6 (Kf8 43 dxe7+, or Ke8 43 Qxe7 mate) 43 Qxe7+ Kf5 44 g4+ hxg4 45 hxg4+ Kxg4 does this. A B down, with mate threatened, White still has work to do.
Oct-27-23  mel gibson: I got confused with this one.

Stockfish 16 says mate in 40:

40. Qh8+

(40. Qh8+ (Qe5-h8+ Kg8xf7 Re1-e7+ Rd7xe7 Qh8-h7+ Kf7-f8 d6xe7+ Kf8-e8 Qh7-g8+ Ke8xe7 Qg8-g7+ Ke7-e6 Qg7xg6+ Ke6-e7 Qg6-g7+ Ke7-e6 Rd1-e1+ Qc6-e4 Qg7-g6+ Ke6-e5 Qg6xh5+ Ke5-d4 Re1xe4+ Bb7xe4 Qh5-g4 Rc8-c1+ Kg1-h2 a5-a4 f2-f3 Rc1-e1 Qg4-g7+ Kd4-d5 Qg7-d7+ Kd5-e5 Qd7-e8+ Ke5-f5 Qe8-c8+ Kf5-g5 Qc8-g4+ Kg5-f6 f3xe4 Re1-a1 Qg4-f5+ Kf6-e7 e4-e5 Ra1-e1 Qf5-f6+ Ke7-d7 Qf6-d6+ Kd7-c8 e5-e6 Re1-c1 e6-e7 Rc1-e1 Qd6-d8+ Kc8-b7 e7-e8Q Re1xe8 Qd8xe8 Kb7-c7 Qe8xa4 Kc7-b7 Qa4-b5+ Kb7-c7 Qb5-c5+ Kc7-d8 b2-b4 Kd8-d7 b4-b5 Kd7-e6 b5-b6 Ke6-f6 b6-b7 Kf6-g7 Qc5-f5 Kg7-h6 b7-b8Q) +M40/54 2095)

White wins _ mate in 40.

Oct-28-23  Arlekhino: Yes, mel gibson, this is a very tricky situation, especially to understand why Black resigned when he is threatening mate in one, if White can´t find a winning follow up, and he is still Bishop up, material wise.

According to my analysis (no Stockfish used), White should have played 44 f3 if the game continued, to parry Black´s mating threat, because after Brenin´s line 44 g4+ hxg4 45 hxg4+ Kxg4, I have found nothing better for White than 46 Rd4+ Kf5 (not 46... Kf3?? 47 Qe3# nor 46... Kh5?? 47 R or Qh4#), so Black´s king miraculously survives, and Black´s mating threat, now by Qg2 or Qh1, looms over White´s King. And then if 47 Qf7+ Ke5 48 Qf4+ Ke6 49 Qg4+ Kf7 50 Rf4+ Kg7 the King finds a shelter, and even if White tries to defend mate by 51 Qh3, Black is winning with 51... Qc1+ followed by Qxf4.

So it seems that Black´s resignation was a bit premature, maybe he thought he couldn´t avoid being mated, but he could keep on fighting, even with his King out in the open.

Oct-28-23  mel gibson: <So it seems that Black´s resignation was a bit premature>

No - Stockfish says when Black resigns:

44. g4+

(g2-g4+ h5xg4 h3xg4+ Kf5xg4 Rd1-d4+ Kg4-f5 Qe7-f7+ Kf5-e5 Qf7-f4+ Ke5-e6 Qf4-e3+ Qc6-e4 Rd4xe4+ Bb7xe4 Qe3xe4+ Ke6xd6 Qe4xg6+ Kd6-e7 f2-f4 Rc8-f8 f4-f5 Rf8-f6 Qg6-g7+ Rf6-f7 Qg7-e5+ Ke7-f8 f5-f6 Rf7-d7 Qe5-b5 Rd7-h7 Qb5xa5 Kf8-f7 Qa5-e5 Kf7-f8 Kg1-f2 Kf8-f7 Qe5-e7+ Kf7-g6 Qe7-e4+ Kg6-h6 Qe4-e8 Rh7-b7 f6-f7 Rb7xb2+ Kf2-f3 Rb2-b3+ Kf3-e4 Rb3-b4+ Ke4-f5 Rb4-b5+ Qe8xb5 Kh6-g7 Qb5-e8 Kg7-h7 Qe8-g8+ Kh7-h6 Qg8-g6+) +M29/64 231

White wins _ mate in 29.

Oct-29-23  Arlekhino: Thank you, mel gibson!

In my analysis I missed 49 Qe3+ (instead of 49 Qg4+?, which leads nowhere), after which Black is forced to play 49... Qe4 and loose his Queen to delay the checkmate, for if 49... Kd7 50 Qe7#; if 49... Kf5 50 Rf4+ Kg5 51 Qe5+ Kh6 52 Rh4#; and also if 49... Kf6 or Kf7 White plays 50 Rf4+ and checkmates in all variations by checks with his Queen and Rook.

So, as they say, if White doesn't play 49... Qe4 and enter a lost position with Rook versus Queen, he gets into "checkoslovaquia" (hehe) and will be mated in a few moves.

Oct-29-23  daladno: Got this one up to 45...Kxg4. Not my typical Sunday.
