Sep-04-23 | | Lambda: I had a different idea, 29.Bf6+ Rxf6 30.Qg7+ Ke8 31.Qxf6 winning the exchange. Computer confirms that both win, and so do a load of more quiet moves, black's position is just too bad. |
|
Sep-04-23 | | Brenin: 29 Nxf5+ Rxf5 30 Qxe4+ wins the exchange and a P, 29 Bf6+ Rxf6 30 Qg7+ wins the exchange. |
|
Sep-04-23 | | Mayankk: Back after a brief break.
My first instinct was to make 29 Qg7+ work but it doesn't. The King can safely hide at e8. I then noticed the 29 Bf6+ idea, winning an exchange if 29 ... Ke8 30 Bxd8. White can then take its time to move its King to h1 and get the Rooks to attack on the open g file. 29 ... Kxf6 30 Qg5# is of course suicide while 29 ... Rxf6 30 Qg7+ Ke8 31 Qxf6 seems worse as it allows White Queen to intrude along with losing the exchange. |

Sep-04-23 | | mel gibson: I was looking for a quick checkmate but couldn't find one.
The Black King escaped with every possible move. Stockfish 16 says:

score for White +6.21 depth 47. |

Sep-04-23 | | saturn2: 29.Bg7 wins an exchange. The Rf8 can only move to e8 and then 30.Qg5+ mates soon. |
|
Sep-04-23 | | saturn2: 6.Qc2 is quiet and should not be answered by the quiet Be7 but by Bd6 to prepare e5 later on. |

|
Sep-04-23 | | Allderdice83: 29. Nxf5+, and there's the text line, but other lines lead to a win of even more material for White, eg. 29 ... Kf7 30. Nxd6+ Qxd6 31. Bc5
29...Ke8 30. Nxd6+ Rxd6 31. Be5 Rg6 32. Qxg6+ hxg6 33. Bxc7 29...Kd7 30. Qg7+ Kc8 31. Nxd6+ Qxd6 32. Qg4+ and either 29 ... Rd7 33. Bc5 (and Black can't pin White's queen), or 29 ... Kb8 33. Be5 Rg8 34. Bxd6+ Ka8 35. Ra1+ Ba6 36. Qxg8 Rxg8+ 37. Kf2 Kb7 38. dxc6+ Ka7 39. Bc5+ |
|
Sep-04-23 | | agb2002: White has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair. The knight is trapped. This suggests 29.Nxf5+:
A) 29... Rxf5 30.Qxe4+ wins decisive material.
B) 29... Kd7 30.Qh3 (30.Nxd6 Rg8) seems to win material (30... Kc8 31.Nxd6+; 30... Ke8 31.Ng7+ and 32.Ne6). C) 29... Ke8 30.Qxe4+ is crushing.
-----
Another option is 29.Bf6+:
A) 29... Kxf6 30.Qg5#.
B) 29... Rxf6 30.Qg7+ Ke8 31.Qxf6 wins an exchange. C) 29... Kd7 30.Bxd8 looks winning but the knight is still stranded. D) 29... Ke8 30.Bxd8 wins an exchange.
-----
I'd play 29.Nxf5+. |

 | | HeMateMe: Not so 'easy'. you're expecting the first move to be a Queen move. |
|
Sep-04-23 | | TheaN: <HeMateMe: Not so 'easy'. you're expecting the first move to be a Queen move.> Which surprisingly works as well. In fact, I let SF ran on the puzzle move, after my choice Bf6+ and the game line which I missed. Apparently best is 29.Qh3 (+7.2) which just puts additional pressure on f5 and Black can't even stop it. Line itself involves putting the king aside the next move, so the direct options are a bit easier: 29.Bf6+ Rxf6 30.Qg7+ (+6.1) and 29.Nxf5+ Rxf5 30.Qxe4+ (+6) evaluate similar. As some have said already, Black's toast either way. |

Sep-04-23 | | Brenin: The Stockfish line 29 Qh3 Qc8 30 Kh1 Bxb4 31 Rg1 Kd6 32 Rxb4 Kc7 etc given by <mel gibson> illustrates how different machines and humans are: I cannot imagine two human beings, faced with this position, coming up with that sequence of moves. |

Sep-04-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: Today, I don't know why, I don't feel potd as "easy"... and I went on a more "complicated" line with Bg7, which also win the quality, has some check mates together. But tooooo long analysis. The simple moves like Nxf5+ or Bf6+ are preferable. |
