  fredthebear: Black burns his boats to get to the White king, but cannot prevent the monarch's escape.

25...Rf2+ would have been an interesting try.

  sbevan: <fredthebear: Black burns his boats to get to the White king, but cannot prevent the monarch's escape. 25...Rf2+ would have been an interesting try.> Whilst "an interesting try" after 26 Kd3:
1. The B is under attack;
2. W threatens to promote;
3. B is still a R down.

So if 25... Rf2+ Black has to loose the B, as the Q is forced to take on d7. Which leaves B with a Q + R against a Q + 2R + N.

As the silicon monster gives:
1) +16.69 (25 ply) 26.Kd3 Qd7 27.Rxe3 Qe8 28.Qh1 h5 29.Qxb7 Kh7 30.Nc4 a5 31.Kd4 c5+ 32.Kd3 Rf6 33.Qd5 h4 34.Nxd6 Rxd6 35.Qxd6 Qb5+ 36.Kc2 Qc4+ 37.Kd2 Qb4+ 38.Kd1 Qxb2 39.Qd3+ g6 40.e8=Q Qxa1+ 41.Ke2 Qxa2+ 42.Kf1

  perfidious: No need to turn to the silicon assistant; it is apparent to any competent player that 25....Rf2+ is not even 'an interesting try', in the words of <fredthebore>, but a damp squib, as Black finds it impossible to simultaneously hold onto his rook and stop promotion.
