Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-24-23  Messiah: Terrible pun.
Jan-24-23  Honey Blend: At least White's 24th move makes a fitting Monday puzzle.
Jan-24-23  goodevans: "13.Kf1 - why isn't he castling?" "14.h4 - why isn't he saving his knight? I think I'll take it anyway." Some people just can't take a hint!

Good game, but I must admit that I'm struggling to find the win after 19...Rxe5 rather than 19...Qxe5.

Jan-24-23  victory1: Sharp play by reginald.too bad only game in database
Jan-24-23  Brenin: <goodevans: ... I must admit that I'm struggling to find the win after 19...Rxe5 rather than 19...Qxe5.> I don't think there is one. After 20 Bb3 Bg4 or 20 Nf3 Bf5 Black seems to have a very satisfactory position.
Jan-24-23  syracrophy: Nice takes!

Jan-24-23  Cibator: I don't know how Mr Thynne's name is pronounced elsewhere in the world, but in the UK (his native country) it's with a long "i" sound. Like the Biblical word "thine", but with a non-vocalised "th" at the beginning.

And as confirmation, I can add that I was once introduced to a namesake of his, and that was definitely how it was said then.

All of which makes the pun dubious at best.

  FSR: Cool game.
Jan-24-23  Cheapo by the Dozen: The pun idea wasn't bad, because Black did indeed fall to destruction in a precarious position. Execution could have livelier, however, e.g. Falling Through or Stumbling (While) On ...

Adds nothing but words. Also takes away another connotation - 'on ice' refers to being dead.

Jan-24-23  ndg2: Remarkable that white does a nasty decoy with his queen not one but two times.

Teyss: Only game in the DB with 11...Bxg5. Other moves are Qa5+ (two Black wins), f5 (White wins) and h6 (White wins).

I don't understand 13.Kf1 at all: genius or provocation? OK, you avoid O-O to leave the R on h1 for a Kside attack. OK, you're weary of Qa5+ but then you could still play it or Ke2. Why waste a move? I need an aspirin.

<MissScarlett (...) 'on ice' refers to being dead.> Or a cocktail.

Jan-24-23  Cibator: Or the ultimate degree in stinkiness.
Jan-24-23  AlicesKnight: Abrahams wrote; "Move 20 is one of very few moves known to the author to merit an exclamation mark although the main variation is only 2 moves deep." (The Chess Mind). He evidently liked it. Thynne 'iced'.
Jan-25-23  ndg2: Kf1 ("wink, wink")
h4 ("nudge, nudge")
hxg5 ("say no more!")

Abrahams has in mind 14. Ne5 with a double hit on f7 but his can be answered with 13...Nxe5 14.dxe5 Qa5+ and White either drops the e-pawn or has to allow the Queens to come off with 15.Qc3.

After 13.Kf1 Ne5 is a threat and keeping the Rook on h1 to play h4 in answer to h6 was part of the plan.

Edward Winter gives a note by Purdy on this game who gave 20 Qg8+!!!

‘We all enjoy bombshell moves. The 20th move in this game makes a loud enough explosion for anybody. Abrahams specializes in bombing.’

  Teyss: Hi Geoff,
Thanks for the explanation and the link. Indeed 20 Qg8+ deserves "!!!"

I wonder if anyone ever gave four exclamation marks to a move. Anyone serious, of course.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Teyss,

I've never seen a !!!! in print but !!! a few times. Most writers stop at !! if the move is exceptional.

In the List of Symbols given by Bill Lombardy in his 'Snatched Opportunities on the Chessboard.' he gives;

! Good Move.
!! Excellent Move.
!!! Wow!

I cannot recall seeing a !!! move in that book. Loads of !! and ?? but no !!!
