Feb-03-23  lentil: oops!!
Feb-03-23  ndg2: Paehtz played quite well in round 1, here she's throws away the game in one move.

Check It Out: Bf4, develops my bishop, connects my rooks, blocks the attack on my h-pawn, and the black rook can't take me because it's pinned to the mate on e8...which is covered by the black queen. derp.

Sally Simpson: White has just played 23.Bc1-f4.

The old backward defensive move. (the BQ covers e8) Witness how easily they are missed...and they will continue to be missed by us all.

Refreshing to see an Evans Gambit but theory has pulled it fangs at the top level. Fortunately in the cabbage patch where I play it still has a bite.

You can spell 'cabbage' with the pawns at the start of the game c3,a3,b3,b4,a4,g3,e3.

Feb-04-23  ndg2: ^Steganography! Have you ever worked as a spy, Sally?

Sally Simpson: Not a spy but as 'CHANDLER' has 8 different letters I once asked FIDE if they would consider changing the algebraic from ABCDEFGH to CHANDLER

(so 1.e4 would become 1.d4 etc)

Then you could play the 'LEARN' opening or Darn opening, or The Ranch...(I feel at home on that one.)

fredthebear: That's quite the spelling lesson, Sally. I thought I had 'cabbage' down pat until I saw your visual aid. I see b-r-a-c-h-i-o-s-a-u-r-u-s or something of the sort.

Here's a tremendous chess tip, at least for Americans that don't get much fiber in their diet:

DO NOT eat cabbage for lunch (including cabbage egg drop soup) after the morning round of a long weekend tournament. I wouldn't eat cabbage the night before either. It has more punch than chili beans, at least for bears.

In fact, for those w/a certain controlled talent, eating a burrito or a bowl of chili could provide one a distinct advantage later on in the tournament if one's system is accustomed to such. Me personally, I just don't risk it. Apple slices, maybe a peanut butter sandwich or a few chicken nuggets for lunch, no soda, keep it light. Folks will have to draw the own conclusions on the club salad.

Of course, Europeans tend to be far more sophisticated than Americans (reference Rdb post-als), so the palate could well be better at handling leafy subjects.

After a short break...

As I live and breath, you were not kidding: https://www.chess.com/openings/Sara...
