Check It Out: White is paralyzed at the end.
Feb-24-23  Yuri Stremel: Fascinating position at the end. White doesn't have a single move that doesn't lose material (he can push the a-pawn, but that is limited). Beautiful win by Gukesh and excellent performance on such a hard tournament

fredthebear: Zwischenzuggery on the weak squares.

Check It Out: Zwischenzug or zugzwang?
Feb-24-23  Yuri Stremel: Zwischen - between
Zwang - obligation
Zug - "thing". In this context, move

Zugzwang translates to something like "forced to move"

tamar: Even if white could pass the move to black fxe4 is crushing.

In his interview with Gukesh, Yasser described 35…f5 as suffocating.

Is there a German word for that? Sauerstoffenzug?

Feb-24-23  paavoh: @<Tamar>: "erstickend" might be the word for suffocating; English connotations are all your choice...

fredthebear: My second more instructive post on zwischenzug and zugzwang, as well as mutual zugzwang was deleted. That's typical treatment -- a glaring double standard where useful chess posts are deleted but the editor is allowed to personally attack members at will saying nothing of use to the reader.

Yes <CIO> this is clearly a Zugzwang - thanks. White can make no improvements. My second post corrected by first post.

Be aware that zugzwang is often mispronounced. It does NOT rhyme with "hug" or "hang". I usually pronounce it twice with my English-speaking students. Once like they'd sound it out (incorrectly), and once in proper fashion: https://accenthero.com/app/pronunci...

Check It Out: <ftb> I saw your other post before it was deleted, and it contained an unprovoked attack against <perfidious>. Neither he nor an "editor" has said a thing on this thread.

When does Zug mean "thing"? I thought in non-chess contexts it would either mean "train" or a noun form of ziehen.

Feb-25-23  stone free or die: <Zwischenzuggery on the weak squares.>

This guy claims to be a chess instructor?!?

To quote - <Pretending again, as always.>

We always knew his Z squares were weak, I'm guessing it's a case of A-Z.

Here's some good old Zappa advice, that just might do <Fred> some good:

<Zappa - Don't eat the yellow snow>

"Don't be a naughty eskimo,
save your money,
don't go to the show."

Feb-25-23  Yuri Stremel: <tonsillolith> I think I have mistaken Zug with Zeug, which would be more approximate to "thing". I need to review my deutsch

I've already corrected myself twice numbnutz.

Now restrict yourself to making chess posts on the chess pages.

Feb-25-23  stone free or die: Somebody forgot to close the faucet again.

<Fred>, you're like a twelve year old who won't ever resign, despite losing time and time again.

perfidious: A sense of purpose and tenacity can be valuable traits; pertinacity, as seen here in one instance, is not.
Feb-26-23  stone free or die: Fred is a fake chess instructor, and pretty poor on trash talking too.

Entertainment value = 0.

Feb-26-23  stone free or die: Fred, you're delusional, and lack self-awareness.
