al wazir: Why did White play 22. Ng4 ?

  beatgiant: <al wazir><Why did White play 22. Ng4 ?> To defend against threats such as might arise after 22. Nc4 Bd4+ 23. Kh1 Bxh3 24. gxh3 Qd7 25. Kg2 Ng6, when Black is swarming all over the kingside.
Jun-07-23  jrredfield: Finally an easy POTD this week. 29 ... Bxg2 was obvious to me. But again like previous puzzles this week, there are several winning moves. Black is simply too well aligned for White to survive long. Rab8 looks good, as does Nd2 or Nf4. And that's as far as I got - I'm sure there's other winners for Black as well.

More analysis reveals perhaps a surefire mate with this sequence: 29 ... Bxg2 30 Kxg2 Nf4+ 31 Bxf4 Qh2+ 32 Kf1 g2+ 33 Ke1 Qh1+ 34 Qg1 Qxg1+ 35 Bf1 gxf1Q+#

Jun-07-23  Allderdice83: I had g2+ followed by Nf4 instead of 31 ... Nf4. I was seeing 32. Bxf4 Qh1+ 33. Qg1, but then of course 33 ... g2+ is mate in 2. In my line 33. Bxf4 Qh1+ wins right away, but I had 33 ... g1=Q+ which wins eventually, eg. 34. Qxg1 Qxg1+ 35. Bf1 Qf2+ 36. Kd1 Rxf4 37. Be2 Rxf3 38. Rc2 Rg3 39. Kc1 Rg1+ 40. Bd1 Qe3+ 41. Rd2 Qxd2#
Jun-07-23  mel gibson: That was fairly easy.

Stockfish 15 says:

29. Qb6 Bxg2 (29. .. Bxg2 (Bh3xg2 Kg1xg2 Ng6-f4+ Be3xf4 Qh4-h2+ Kg2-f1 Qh2-h1+ Qb6-g1 g3-g2+ Kf1-e1 Qh1xg1+ Be2-f1 Qg1xf1+) +M7/87 15)

Black wins _ mate in 7.

When White resigns:

32. Rb2 (Rb1-b2 Ra8-b8 Be2-b5 Qh2-h1+ Be3-g1 Rb8xb6 f3xe4 Qh1xe4 Rb2-g2 Bg7-c3 Bg1-d4+ Bc3xd4 Rc1-c2 Bd4-f2 Rc2xf2 Qe4-b1+) -M8/75 26

Black wins _ mate in 8.

An Englishman: Good Evening: The fun (but not fastest) variation consists of 32.fxe4,Nd3+ and White can interpose on f6, f4, and f3 but it won't matter.
Jun-07-23  agb2002: Black has a knight for a pawn.

White threatens Qxg6 and Nxa8 (fxe4 loses to Bxg2).

The first idea that comes to mind 29... Bxg2 30.Kxg2 Qh2+ 31.Kf1 g2+ 32.Ke1 g1=Q+ fails to 33.Bxg1. This suggests 29... Nf4:

A) 30.fxe4 Bxg2 and mate in three.

B) 30.Bxf4 Bxg2 31.Kxg2 (31.Bxg3 Qh1#) 31... Qh2+ 32.Kf1 Qh1+ 33.Qg1 g2+ 34.Ke1 Qxg1+ 35.Bf1 Qxf1#.

C) 30.Bf1 Bxg2 31.Bxg2 Qh2+ 32.Kf1 Qxg2+ 33.Ke1 Qe2#.

D) 30.Kf1 Nxg2 looks crushing. For example, 31.Bc5 Nd2+ 32.Kg1 Bg4 followed by Qh2#.

E) 30.Ne6 Bxg2 31.Nxf4 Qh1#.

Jun-07-23  agb2002: According to DroidFish, the game move 29... Bxg2 is considerably faster than my 29... Nf4 (mate in 18).

scormus: Crucial to the quickest win is seeing that W has DSB and Q covering g1. Then Ng4 at the right time with check forces a deflection of the DSB and leaves B defenceless to stop the mate.

  perfidious: Easier than yesterday's POTD.
Jun-07-23  Brenin: <agb2002: According to DroidFish, the game move 29... Bxg2 is considerably faster than my 29... Nf4 (mate in 18).> Yes, the point is that Black needs to play Nf4 at some stage, to force White to take the BSB off the defence of g1 with Bxf4, and the best moment this is immediately after the exchange on g2, so that Nf4 is check, gaining a tempo. Playing Nf4 without check, on move 29 (as in your line) or 31 (as in the game) still wins, such is Black's overwhelming concentration of fire-power, but more slowly.

  Honza Cervenka: 29...Bxg2 30.Kxg2 Qh2+ 31.Kf1 g2+ 32.Ke1 Rxf3 (threatening with Rxe3) 33.Bxf3 g1=Q+ 34.Bxg1 Qd2+ 35.Kf1 Ng3#.
Jun-07-23  Brenin: <Honza Cervenka>: As a sideline to your 32 ... Rxf3+, we have the following entertaining King hunt: 33 Kd1 g1=Q+ 34 Bxg1 Rf1+ 35 Kc2 (not 35 Bxf1 Qd2 mate) Qxe2+ 36 Kb3 a4+ 37 Kb4 Bc3+ 38 Rxc3 Rxb1+ 39 Rb3 Rxb3 mate. Who would have guessed that Black's a-pawn would play a critical role in this attack?

chrisowen: Hup maced it's revs blink q it's won Bxg2 acrid mod fab aba it's auld bubblegum veg Bxg2 cert
Jun-07-23  takchess: Got the first move which I would of played in a game.
Jun-07-23  TheaN: I played this slightly more direct with <29....Bxg2 30.Kxg2 Nf4+> which seems to do the job nicely, as <Brenin> describes correctly: 30....Nf4+ is #5, whereas 30....Qh2+ (which Black has anyway) is #10. Ie, <31.Bxf4 (Ke1 g2+ 32.Kg1 Qh1#) Qh2+ 32.Kf1 g2+ #3> and White is toast. I didn't see the mate in full, but losing a defender of g1 and being able to promote in full is an easy win anyways.
Jun-07-23  TheaN: In hindsight 33....Qh1+ is quite easy, I was a bit too focused on 33....g1Q+, which is #6 instead of #3. Both resignation #1, so I'll take it.

Better is 22. Nd3.

  beatgiant: <al wazir> You're right, 22. Nd3 Bd4+ 23. Kh1 Bxh3 <24. Nxf4> and I can't find any quick knockout. That does seem like a better try than the game's 22. Ng4.
Jun-07-23  alshatranji: I went about it the longer way, just as Honza Cervenka said. I knew there had to be simpler way, but I couldn't find it.
Jun-07-23  Cfachini28: I had 31...g2+, which the engine says is mate-in-8 either way

  beatgiant: <al wazir> Maybe 22. Nd3 Bd4+ 23. Kh1 Bxh3 24. Nxf4 Rxf4 25. Bxf4 <Nxd5> 26. Nxd5 Qh4 27. Bxg3 Qxg3 28. Bc4 <Bg4> and it looks like White will have to drop some major material to stop the attack.

dheilke: <Brenin>: I don't understand how more people did not see ...Rxf3+ as a viable continuation. It isn't Stockfish acurate, but it makes the ensuing attack much easier from a human standpoint!!

My line: 29...Bxg2 30. Kxg2 Qh2+ 31. Kf1 Qh1+ 32. Bg1 Rxf3+ 33. Ke1[1] Rf2‼ and Stockfish says the best move for white is 34. Qb8+ -- which is Stockfish's way of resigning

[1] 33. Bxf3 Qxf3+ 34. Ke1[2] Bc3+ also leads to a quick death

[2] 34. Bf2 Rf8 35. Rc2 gxf2 36. Rxf2 Nxf2 37. Qxf2 Qh1+ 38. Ke2 Rxf2+ 39. Kxf2 Qxb1 if the goal is to genocide the white forces...

Jun-07-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: The first idea is: 29...Bxg2 30. Kxg2 Nf4+ 31. Bxf4 Qh2+ 32. Kf1 Qh1+ 33. Qg1 g2+ 34. Ke1 Qxg1+ 35. Bf1 Qxf1#. If 31. Kf1 g2+ 32. Kg1 Qh1#. Or 31. Kg1 Qh2+ 32. Kf1 Qxe2+ 33. Kg1 Qg2# . Today is Monday again! Very good! My namesake did well too! I guess my line is also interesting.
Jun-08-23  Steve Holloway: Qh1 must win too
