MissScarlett: The game was broadcast in instalments on the BBC Third Programme (later Radio 3) every Sunday from January 26th to March 15th. The commentary appears to have come exclusively from Penrose and Tal.

Sally Simpson: Gligoric and Penrose opened with 1.e4.

"I [Golombek] asked Tal what reply we should make."

"You choose", he said "You've written chess books. I haven't"

perfidious: If, instead the game had been played twenty years on, perhaps Golombek would have opted for the cheeky 1....c6, by then a line in Tal's praxis, rather than a typical Sicilian.

moronovich: Met Golombek in Geneva1977.He was with Spassky, Kavalek and Smyslov in the same hotel. Just across the maintrainstation.

Spassky was playing his match with Portisch, but very forthcoming and friendly to chat with.

perfidious: <moronovich>, it seems we missed each other--I spent a week in Geneva in mid October that year.

moronovich: Oh, that was a shame ):

And Geneva is a wonderful city, much underestimated IMHO.
