Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-24-23  Mayankk: What a sparkling game by Anand at the age of 54.

If 23 Qxe6+ Rxe6 24 gxh7+ and now White is down a Queen and Rook, but will still mate Black shortly.

  HeMateMe: All home prep, though?
Sep-24-23  Mayankk: Then it's even more commendable. So well prepared despite playing only sporadically.
Sep-28-23  Brenin: <Mayankk>: <So well prepared ...>? No, Anand well prepared!

An Englishman: Good Evening: Black had a few chances to play ...Nc5xBd3 and passed on all of them. A light-squared Bishop can be deadly v. the French (and was in this game), so why didn't he grab it?
Sep-28-23  Mayankk: Haha. Thanks for the correction <Brenin>.

Hi <An Englishman>, Black's plan was probably to render the light-squared Bishop ineffective by his King-side pawn wall while attacking on the Queenside with his b pawn advance. After 18 ... b4 19 axb4 Nxb4, Black has a strong attack of his own.

However after the Knight sac 19 gxf5 bxc3 20 fxg6, the e6 pawn was suddenly vulnerable. And Black had no time to defend via 20 ... Rae8 and still keep its own attack going.

Sep-28-23  goodevans: After 23...Rxe6 24.gxh7+ Kf7 25.h8=Q Black would still be up a R for 2Ps but would have to throw away almost everything for his K to survive.

Had So continued the probable finish would have been exquisite: 24...Qxh7 25.Qd6+ (not 25.Bxh7?? Rxe6 ∓) 25...Qe7 26.Qh6+ Kf7

... and now White has a choice of no less than four different 'mate-in-2's (my favourite being 27.e6+ Qxe6 28.Qg7#).

What a great game and a damned good pun too.

perfidious: Good pun and lovely game by Anand (who was, for the sake of accuracy, actually aged 53 then).
