The old I'll Queen first and skewer you trick.

Nov-02-23  coolthing76: Very interesting game by Adhiban as usual.
Nov-02-23  redcircle: Adhiban's immortal! What a game

He'll probably live to about 80-90.

This is a really good game. Modern players aren't punchbags. They defend extremely well, and the games are balanced on a knife-edge.

Nov-03-23  SkySports: A great game for Adhiban, in an otherwise very poor tournament for him.

Better late than never.

Nov-03-23  Brenin: A very enjoyable game.
Nov-03-23  goodevans: What a cracking game. With so much to choose from I focused much of my efforts on the 31st moves of the two players.

Here I'd have been sorely tempted to play 31.hxg5 but after 31...Qxc5 I'd have naused it up with 32.b3? Qg1+ 33.Kb2 Qd4+ 34.Kb1 Qd1+ 35.Kb2 Ne3 with mate to follow. 32.a4 would have been okay but then 32...Qxc4 would have secured a draw.

Adhiban chose <31.Bxf8> instead at which point GM Iturrizaga Bonelli made a fateful choice. White clearly has a draw in hand if he so wishes and it doesn't take a great deal of calculation to see that <31...Qxe4!> would have given Black the same.

Now 32.b3 Qe1+ is obviously a draw so White must play 32.a3 or 32.a4 whereupon 32...Qxc4 is still a draw. For example 32.a4 Qxc4 33.Rg7+ Kh8 34.b3 Qf1+ 35.Kb2 Qxf5 and finally White must take the draw.

Did Iturrizaga Bonelli think 31...Qc4 was also good for the draw? If so, he was sadly mistaken. Whatever it was, I'm glad he erred as otherwise MAD ('Mutually Assured Destruction') would have seen us deprived of the neat finish.

fredthebear: 16...b4 didn't readily come to mind.

That's a whopper of a combination starting with the sacrifice 20.Nac5! White turns up the raking bishops en route to some fascinating back rank action.

This game deserves to be famous.

Honza Cervenka: Very epic game. 25.Rd5 with idea 25...Qc7 26.Qd3 would have been more precise. 25.Qd3 with idea 26.Qd8+ was beautiful but it gave black a chance to save the game after 31...Qxe4!, as <goodevans> has pointed out.

fredthebear: Upside down and backward like an overpriced used car payment, I meant to say 16.g6 in the post above, which Black could have met by castling short, but slightly worse off.

After 17...Kxf7:

17...Kxf7 allowing castling by hand had to be tempting rather than hiding behind the passed pawn. Either way, Black is losing. Black's inactive Rh8 suffers there. Stockfish says 28...Ng6 is equal.

That f7-pawn was the cog in White's continuing scheme. Mercy sakes alive, the passer survives, thrives and finally promotes on 41.f8=Q!
