perfidious: The less said of Black's play, the better, but the finish was nice. Monday POTD material.

Belopolsky would beat Patrick Wolff in the last round to make 4-0, pipping Ilya Gurevich on 3.5, who had drawn with Wolff in the second round.

Well, one could say 20...g6 turned a cramped game into a losing game but Belopolsky did get a nice finish out of it.

perfidious: In our nine meetings, Boris and I had a mix of slugfests and brevities. The four missing games had their share of fight also.

As to this game, I do not recall my thoughts then but would infer that I felt ....g6 was a necessity, as well as the unpalatable ....Bxg5. Maybe <fishie> holds this for Black, but for mere mortals, it is unpleasant at best.

Nov-18-24  stone free or die: <perf> do you know of any PD photos of Boris?

perfidious: <zed>, what do you mean by 'PD photos'?

One of Boris' images may be in a back number of <Chess Horizons> from the 1980s, but most of mine are missing

Nov-18-24  stone free or die: PD = Public Domain.

Looking for a photo to put on his <CG> bio.

Nov-18-24  areknames: I never played 1.d4 too often and I certainly never played the QID but playing through this game I felt that 11...c5 was the active and natural choice especially considering that White's game hadn't been particularly enterprising up to that point.

perfidious: Um, 'public domain' should have been obvious.
Nov-18-24  stone free or die: Well, it one could imagine PD = Pretty Damning as well!

Williebob: A photo of <Alan>'s opponent giving a shifty-looking 'OK' sign over his shoulder during a game.

Could be a tough git; Boris generally bore an impassive mien during a game. No real tells.
