offramp: I am hoping that Gukesh gets a lucky win after a gaffe. I could not stand to see another Nepo WC match.

Tabanus: They're following J McConnell vs Steinitz, 1883.

Stonehenge: Maybe he's thinking about 8...Bd6.

After 9. Nc3 0-0, then 10. 0-0 would transpose to the Steinitz game.

Nepo prefers to castle as late as possible. Modern GMs do that.

Apr-15-24  whiteshark: TOP PAIRING

D Gukesh and Ian Nepomniachtchi are still in the lead scoring 5.5/9 each.

(Both Gukesh and Vidit have now scored three wins each at this event.)

An Englishman: Good Afternoon: First the Schliemann Deferred, now the Cozio Deferred. Thus chess moves into the future by returning to the 19th Century. Rather curious. Looks as if both players have decided to draw respectfully with each other, and let their results vs. the rest of the field decide all.
Apr-15-24  whiteshark: Now that only all the heavy pieces and 7 pawns each remain on the board, it looks difficult to bring in reinforcements, considering there is only one open line.
Apr-15-24  whiteshark: Is this perhaps the start of the carefully maneuver* game? Nimzowitsch mentioned this three times in "My System".

perfidious: In Euwe's <The Middle Game In Chess>, he roughly translated 'lavieren' as 'tacking'.

perfidious: Had never seen this deferred version of the Cozio till now; very often it appears to transpose into the Modern Steinitz after c3 d6 sometime along. Giving up the centre looks unusual and hardly thematic.
Apr-15-24  whiteshark: the last dozen moves were flashed out. (1/2)
Apr-16-24  paavoh: < Spectating chess at these long time controls are SOOOO BORING> Just wait until the game has ended and then speed-click thru it :-)
