perfidious: Many may complain of all the drawn games in this event, but this was a savage battle, worth the price of admission.

DaltriDiluvi: I'm pretty sure that So had winning chances in this game. For example, here's the position after <57...Kh7>:

So played <58.Qf5>, but my computer really likes <58.Nh4!>. After <58...Qh2+ 59.Ke3>, the white queen on e5 stops Black from playing <Qxg3+> and getting counterplay against the white king as it happened in the game.

Jul-04-24  goodevans: An amazing game indeed. The fact that Abdusattorov survived is hard to believe. His threats of counterattack proved just enough although it seems So did miss a few ideas for an outright win.

Perhaps the simplest (one that I can readily grasp) was 47.Rf3!:

By rendering 47...Qf1+ harmless White would have forced Black completely on the defensive and without the counterattack he won't survive long.

A more difficult one to see would have been 53.Rf1!:

The idea is that White can follow up with 54.Nd5!, once again snuffing out the counterattack and posing the unanswerable threat of 55.Rf8.

<DaltriDiluvi>'s 58.Nh4! appears to be the final winning opportunity and once again hinges on being able to extinguish that counterattack. That, it seems, was the key.

Jul-04-24  Andrew Chapman: I did think at 19.g3 that white could have some problems on the light squares..

  Sally Simpson: Bewildering.

It would have been unfair is either player lost this one. A real battle.

Here, Black to play.

That mating pattern if Black plays 80....Qxe7 is one you do not see everyday.

Jul-05-24  Saniyat24: Wesley So had a super knight but so what? :D Noddy had an Iron bishop that helped his Queen stick like glue to the White King...a very entertaining game indeed...!
