Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-15-24  Alan McGowan: This game appeared in 'Chess Memoirs', by Dr Joseph Platz (Chess Enterprises, USA, 1979).

Platz tells of being assigned to show the sights of Cologne to Spielmann, who visited the city soon after the Semmering tournament. He also asked Spielmann if he was willing to play a few games, to which the Master agreed.

Spielmann won the first game, but was shocked in the second.

Platz writes:

After this game we promised each other not to publish my innovation [13...f6] until Master Spielmann had tested it in tournament play. This he did in two games with success. He later published the variation and mentioned me as its author. [Kagans Neueste Schachnachrichten 1928, Nr 9/10, pp285-289.] He reported this to me in Munich, German, 1928...'

Platz also won the third game, and drew the fourth and fifth, winning 3-2. 'Spielmann admitted that this was his worst match score against an amateur. Unfortunately the other games were lost when I had to flee from Germany in 1933.'
