Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-26-25  chatushkon64: Sri Lankan IM Ranindu Liyanage isn't going to ever forget this game, as he took down one of the world's brightest prodigies, and future world champion GM Dommaraju Gukesh.

As of January 2025, it remains the last time that Gukesh was defeated over the board by a non-GM.

Jan-26-25  chatushkon64: Incidentally, this loss meant that Gukesh slipped down to very low boards (non-digital boards) for rounds 3 and 4 of the 19th Delhi Open. Hence, I can't trace the game scores of his wins against his opponents in rounds 3 and 4 of this tournament (the only OTB Gukesh games post 2022 that are missing). He climbed back up to the digital boards from round 5 onwards and went on to finish 2nd eventually behind GM Arjun Erigaisi.

Relegation to that non-digital world sounds like a form of hell on earth; it is fortunate that the lad was able to restore his reputation and return from the dead. Few are vouchsafed such an opportunity.
