Sally Simpson: The strange odds for this game were, White removes their Queen, Black removes their Queen's Rook. White is allowed to play the first six moves without reply but none must cross the 4th rank.

It good to see what our forefathers were up to when tweaking odds conditions. The game details including the source I picked from Edward Winter's 'Chess Explorations.'

I was thinking surely there is a better series of 6 moves than those played. So I tinkered about with Bc4's and Qf3's etc... I'd been doing this about 10 minutes when I suddenly remembered White never had a Queen. DOH!!

perfidious: These conditions for odds rival that of capped (or ringed) knight for the truly bizarre.

Sally Simpson: Mr. Winter has it as Dr. Robert M. from the main source. I suspect he, or his merry band of helpers may have tried to unearthed who he (or indeed she) was but as yet no success.

It is obvious to me that whilst in Hamburg John Lennon saw this game used the name when penning 'Doctor Robert' for the Revolver L.P.
