 | | An Englishman: Good Morning: Compared with the Exchange Variation, 6.Bxc6 waits until Black has committed the Bf8 and Ng8 to less than ideal squares. In the 4.Bxc6 Exchange Variation, 5.0-0,f6; 6.d4,exd4; 7.Nxd4,Bd6 followed by ...Ng8-e7-g6 restrains White's pawn majority better than a B on e7 and N of f6. But the fact that the Exchange appears more than three time as the Doubly Deferred in the DB suggests that maybe its "advantages" offer less than meets the eye. |
May-31-25 | | Retireborn: It's also a way to shut down piggies who want to play the Marshall Attack. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Morning: In the database, 8...Bf6 appears only in E Ermenkov vs R Hernandez Onna, 1978. A draw, but not uninteresting. |

 | | Sally Simpson: Yes that game Englishman (good afternoon) linked to has the kind of White attack I could drum up if Black 0-0. Happy memories. In that linked game.
click for larger viewSurely White should have played 28.hxg5. then sac-sac and mate. It's when they 0-0-0 I had to re-think my plan - which was of course now throw my Queenside pawns at them. |

May-31-25
 | | Sally Simpson: Magnus has gone Kingside, O.K. Fabiano go and get him, just follow the overall plan played on Halloween in 1978. A Kingside Monte Carlo Attack. Nd2-f1. g2-g4, Ng3 throw up the h-pawn. Me and you could win this with one hand tied behind our backs. |
May-31-25 | | Bobby Fiske: Fresh analysis of the open choice from Magnus himself, right out of the Confessional Booth: https://x.com/chess24com/status/192... |

May-31-25
 | | An Englishman: Good Morning: Black did well to avoid ...exd4 until after Nb1-d2. Now the horse sits on an imperfect square. White must have a slight advantage thanks to the center, but have a feeling Carlsen doesn't have any qualms. |
May-31-25
 | | Check It Out: Magnus is terrified. Those juggernaut pawns on d4 and e4, Caruana with his sinister beady little eyes staring him down, saying, ive played second fiddle to you long enough. You are going down, Norway boy! |
May-31-25
 | | Sally Simpson: Stop thinking Fabiano. 15.Rad1. These good guys hate having their Queen x-rayed by a Rook. If it was anyone else you would have played it right away. |
May-31-25
 | | OhioChessFan: White to play his 16th. The only positive I see for Carlsen is the Bishop pair. Somehow I expect that to be more pronounced 20 moves from now. |
May-31-25
 | | An Englishman: Good Morning: Does Black want to activate the Ra8 via ...a5-a4 and ...Ra8-a5? That is um--interesting. |
May-31-25
 | | Sally Simpson: Nb1. I thought so. That e3 Bshop was in the way. It has to come back to c1 then Nd2-f1 etc etc. <Check it out> Are you sure he is Norwegian, I looked at that clip Bobby posted. He has not got blonde hair, nor is he wearing a Marius pattern jumper.
I think he is an Austrian. That horse logo on his shirt is the club badge of Vienna Rovers a Division III Austrian team not many of you will have heard off. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Morning: Vienna Rovers! One of my favorite teams, along with Hashtag United and Greek Philosophers... The game itself has begun to puzzle me five remaining brain cells. Not sure why Black avoided ...Ra5, and not sure what ...Be7 accomplished. |
May-31-25
 | | Sally Simpson: Move 17. Fabiano thinking. Be7 was Magnus waiting for Bc1 and then on Nd2 or Nc3 then Bb4 to pin and swap off the Knight before it goes to g3 and 1-0. After BxN it is an opposite coloured Bishop game and Magnus wins those. |
May-31-25 | | vonKrolock: 17...cd5 looks playable |
May-31-25
 | | An Englishman: Good Morning: Allowing 19.dxc6,bxc6 yielding isolated doubled c-pawns on a half-open file looks too risky. |
May-31-25
 | | offramp: Calsen likes to have doubled pawns. |
May-31-25 | | vonKrolock: 19.a3, and if now Bxc3 20.Queen takes and if Qe4 then Bh6!! - so 19...Bd6 seems to be adequate |
May-31-25 | | Bobby Fiske: Move 23: Caruanna with a seemingly good position, sensing the win, but burning time. Will he survive the endgame low on the clock? |
May-31-25
 | | An Englishman: Good Morning: Does White really have enough for the sacrificed pawn? Black's Bc8 and Ra8 remain inactive, but he still seems to have enough pieces to defend the Kg8. If White can't do something with Rd1 and Bd4 v. Qd7, what will he do? |
May-31-25
 | | Korora: And in the time it took me to examine the position, the cat won it. |
May-31-25 | | cehertan: Fabi gave it a good go. I thought he might pull it out. |
May-31-25
 | | An Englishman: Good Morning: Had to spend some time with my second screen (PSG 1, Inter 0, 12th minute). Coming back, it seems White could have done better. True, my thinking re: chess has fallen hopelessly behind the times, but it still looks like 19.dxc6,bxc6 would have left White in a better situation. |
May-31-25
 | | HeMateMe: Looks drawn to me... |
May-31-25
 | | Sally Simpson: Magnus won the Armageddon game.
I left this to watch the football. Won a few quid on it especially with 4+ goals scored. (it was 5-0). |
