Apr-06-04  Taidanii: He's drinking a Red Bull while playing Chess? I wonder if it actually helps...

  Sneaky: It gives him wings.
Apr-06-04  Taidanii: Haha...I new someone would post that, <Sneaky>
Apr-07-04  skeet: I find caffeine helps me think clearer, faster, and with more energy in chess. I try to limit my intake of the stuff though... I think it's highly underrated as a detrimental drug.
Apr-07-04  ughaibu: Caffeine alters the perception of time so that, in effect, a player has more thinking time after drinking coffee. I'm surprised it's not banned in FIDE events.
Apr-07-04  waddayaplay: Cigarettes are banned in most tournaments, aren't they? sigh..

Tal used to smoke five pakets during each game, said his ex wife... i myself can't imagine playing without smoking when i play on the internet. maybe have to switch to coffee when i start playing in clubs again...

Apr-07-04  Bears092: I don't do anything strange like that, save a hooded sweatshirt and a bottle of water...
Apr-30-04  MoonlitKnight: A smoking opponent would freak me out, but I would gladly accept it if it was the Wizard...
Jun-08-04  Cyphelium: After considering the Apr 07 remark by ughaibu, it seems to me that some of Einstein's theories are in need of revision.
Jun-08-04  Calchexas: LOL, that's great.

t' = t / sqrt(1-c^2/d^2), where c is the amount of caffeine consumed, and d is the fatal dosage of caffeine.

Jun-11-04  poktirity: Theory of caffeinetivity =)
Jun-11-04  poktirity: Calchexas: So if you OD Caffeine time goes backwards before you die?
Oct-22-04  mack: For some reason alcohol is banned from most playing halls. Surely it's your choice if you want to potentially weaken your game?
Oct-22-04  Granite: Caffine is proven to improve performances on tests under certain conditions. Don't drink the caffine to early or you'll come down and have a negative effect, ideally you should aim to consume it immediately before an exam, assuming it's 30 minutes.

If the exam is longer you should consume it with ~45 minutes left, or a bit less for maximum performance. The same is true for quick sugars such as choclate or candies. I have not seen any studies done on chess and caffine, but somehow I feel the exam situation to be sufficiently analagous.

FIDE should probably not ban it, since it's only a moderate effect and smoking is distracting while drinking will always be a part of the game even if it's only water, they're just too long. Also, it's simply a more widely used and socially acceptable drug, which has some weight.

Dec-10-04  pkjohn146: good for him, playing the King's Gambit.
Dec-11-04  RisingChamp: I think any kind of performance enhancing substance is fine as long as it can be used without serious undesirable side effets. If people think coffee helps everyone can drink it and please dont tell me you have serious health problems from drinking coffee.Sterioids and other such things are different and since they are harmful should be banned since it is unfair to give an advantage to those who dont care about long term health.
Jul-11-05  farrooj: Isn't there a list of banned drinks by FIDE?

Sep-05-05  SambaDanne: http://www.energyfiend.com/death-by...

Lets assume that is weight is 70 kg... If he drinks more than 132 cans during a game, he´s dead.

Sep-05-05  BaranDuin: <ughaibu: Caffeine alters the perception of time so that, in effect, a player has more thinking time after drinking coffee. I'm surprised it's not banned in FIDE events.>

As we all know, "time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so."

Dec-21-05  billiejoelover21: i wonder if that redbull will kill his brain cells?
Jan-29-06  rKa: He actually also plays Magic: The Gathering (a huge trading card game) very well, appearing in the top8 of a 1000+player tournament in Hasselt/Belgium.

Dec-24-06  Caissanist: Reinderman is a truly amazing photographer, at least to judge by the photographs here on Chessgames. He seems to have a remarkable knack for capturing a player's personality in a photograph.
Dec-24-06  Nibiru: I drew once against Reinderman in Arnhem (Holland) but that was only a quick game, not official.
