ROBERT WADE
(born Apr-10-1921, died Nov-29-2008, 87 years old) New Zealand (federation/nationality United Kingdom)

[what is this?]

Robert Graham Wade was born on the 10th of April 1921 in Dunedin, New Zealand. Awarded the IM title in 1950 he was New Zealand Champion in 1943-44 (after a play-off), 1944-45 and 1947-48.

Looking for greater chess opportunities he went to Europe around 1949 and settled in England. He won the British Championship in 1952 and 1970 and was very active in British chess, training young players and being in charge of the Batsford Chess Library in London.

As an author, he wrote The Games of Robert J Fischer (containing virtually all of Fischer's games), Soviet Chess, The World Chess Championship, World championship interzonals: Leningrad and Petropolis 1973, Playing Chess, World Chess Championship 1951, and a number of opening monographs and tournament bulletins.

Wade played for the English Olympiad team six times from 1954-72 and for the New Zealand Olympiad team in 1970, that nation's Olympiad debut. Still an active player in his late 80s, he was able to play at a high level, as evidenced by his draw against Kiwi Grandmaster Murray Chandler in the Queenstown Chess International 2006 when Wade was looking forward to his 85th birthday.

May-12-04  Benzol: Robert Graham Wade
Born 10th April 1921 Dunedin
Dec-14-05  Caissanist: The contents of Bobby Fischer's storage locker went up for sale today on EBay; among the items are the carefully prepared opening notes that Wade did for Fischer in preparation for his 1972 matches. Reportedly Wade acted as kind of a human openings database for Fischer and many other western players, in the pre-PC days.

Dec-14-05  Benzol: <Caissanist> I may have the chance to meet Bob Wade in January, if so I'll ask him about it.

Richard Taylor: <Benzol> Is Wade playing at the Queenstown Classic?
Dec-14-05  Benzol: <Richard> He's going to stay with Tony Booth for a night or so and then going to see his sister who still lives in Dunedin. From what Tony said to me I believe he will play in the tourney. However, Paul Spiller would be the best one to ask about that. Are you attending the club dinner on Tuesday? If so you could ask Paul then.
Dec-15-05  Caissanist: <Benzol> Thanks, it would be very interesting to hear his thoughts on Fischer and the work he did for other GMs as well.
Feb-01-06  Mac3: Bob Wade did play in the Queenstown Classic tournament scoring 6/10 with only one loss. What an amazing result!

In Bob's game against Murray Chandler (the tournament's eventual winner), Bob played a queen sac and Murray had to dig deep, the game eventually ended in a draw.

Here are complete details of the tournament including some pgn games that should be included in this site!

Speaking personally it was a highlight to be able to talk Bob (a distant relative on Dad's mother's side of the family).

It has been 57 and 1/2 years since Bob has been back to NZ and what an honour to have had him back after all that time!

Aug-19-07  Benzol: The book Bob Wade - Tribute To A Chess Master compiled and edited by Ray Cannon with an introduction by Ray Keene is definitely on my must purchase list. It was an honour to meet him in person. As my father commented at the time "Being with him is like being in the presence of Yoda". Has anybody seen any review of the book anywhere?
Nov-10-07  Benzol: I've got hold of "Bob Wade - Tribute To A Chess Master". It's a good book with 27 annotated games, 213 unannotated ones, 22 puzzle positions, a tactical test section and an introductory biographical article by Ray Keene. Wish I'd been able to read some of it and been a bit more informed before I met him personally. Oh well, if wishes were horses...

Eric Schiller: Since Ray Keene hasn't posted this I will: Bob Wade will play in the 2008 GM Staunton Memorial, it seems this will be a record for the oldest participant in a GM-norm Round Robin.

So I guess I'll be handling all the arbiter duties and someone else will do game commentary. It will be a fascinating event, as always.

Apr-10-08  brankat: Good to hear R.Wade will participate in the Staunton Memorial. At the age of 87! This will have to be a record.

Happy Birthday Mr.Wade!

Apr-10-08  jamesmaskell: The ECF has the full press release.

Im guessing this is the Wade who has a variation of the QGD Slav named after him?

Apr-10-08  Benzol: Happy Birthday Bob.

:)

Jun-15-08  hedgeh0g: From Wikipedia:

In 1951, International Master Robert Wade gave a simultaneous exhibition against 30 Russian schoolboys, aged 14 and under. After seven hours of play, Wade had lost 20 games and drawn the remaining ten (16.7%). (Chernev 1974, p. 110)

Ouch...what happened?

Jun-16-08  RookFile: I'm sure they are all talented players.
Jun-16-08  hedgeh0g: Talented, sure, but all IMs? Hardly.
Jun-23-08  whiteshark: All good things come to those who can Wade.
Jun-23-08  MaczynskiPratten: Playing a simul seems to knock about 400 ELO points (or 50 British grading points) off your strength. I tried doing it recently and came unstuck against a couple of supposedly much wekaer players. Conversely I once beat an IM rated nearly 500 points higher in a simul.
Aug-18-08  Xeroxx: Dont Wade too long for good things to happen tho.
