Apr-06-06  who: Great picture.
Apr-07-06  Benzol: Anyone remember Windom playing Congressman Glen Morley in a series that also starred Inga Stevens. The Farmers Daughter or some title like that. She was very attractive but sadly committed suicide. If I remember correctly she was only about 30.
Apr-07-06  Benzol: Sorry I spelt her name wrongly, it's Inger Stevens. See

for a bit more information.

Incidentally the role of Commodore Matt Decker (see above picture) was originally envisaged for actor Robert Ryan.

Apr-07-06  suenteus po 147: His role as Commodore Matt Decker is timeless (especially for Star Trek fans), but I actually remember him better playing the "Dr. Watson" character to Angela Lansbury's "Jessica (Sherlock Holmes)Fletcher" on "Murder, She Wrote."
Apr-07-06  Kennedy Hauser: Wasn't there a musician named Windom, played light, airy stuff?

Open Defence: There was a musician named Windom
Who hailed from the back alleys of Swindon
He blew his brass trumpet
For all the East End's strumpets
And now plays with George Clinton
Apr-07-06  norami: Decker: You said it yourself Spock. There's no way to blast through the hull of his position so I'm gonna send my king right down his throat.

Kirk: This is Jim. Matt, you'll be checkmated.

Decker: I've been prepared for checkmate ever since I . . . ever since I blundered my pawns.

Spock: You cannot succeed, Commodore. Your only logical alternative is to return to g1.

Decker: A player is responsible for the lives of his pawns . . . and for their deaths. Well, I should have died with mine.

Kirk: Matt, you're a grandmaster, that makes you a valuable commodity. We need you, your endame expertise, your knowledge of the Sicilian. Matt! We're stronger with you than without you!

Apr-11-06  Benzol: He recently reprised his Decker role in the New Voyages. Babara Luna (from the episode "Mirror Mirror") played his wife. Is she Will Decker's mother?

keypusher: So who was Commander Matt Decker?

chancho: <Keypusher> Commodore Decker, was a man obsessed with destroying the Planet destroyer."cone thingy" (he lost all of his crew as a result) He wanted to do the same for the Enterprise,(by taking command) but Kirk and Spock eventually stopped him. Decker then stole a shuttle craft, and drove it into the planet destroyer. (killing himself in the process) Kirk saw that it damaged the thing somewhat, and decided to drive Deckers damaged starship into it. (Kirk had the sense to get himself beamed out of that ship) The resultant explosion, destroyed the planet thingy, and they went back to playing galactic chess.(Kirk beat Spock as usual)

keypusher: If he was a commodore, didn't he outrank Kirk? Couldn't he just order Kirk to obey him?

chancho: <Keypusher> He did use his rank to take over the Enterprise. Kirk later had him removed from command, because Decker's obsession to destroy the Doomsday machine showed him to be unfit to command.

chancho: Some info on this american actor:

<Has been profiled in Chess Life magazine twice (he is a tournament player with a penchant for unusual openings; one of his positions had turned up in a Chess Life problem column before the magazine interviewed him). The second time, in 1988, he appeared with his friend Claude Akins (who had been on Murder She Wrote as Captain Ethan Craig the season before Windom became Dr. Seth Hazlitt) playing a game in Windom's back yard. During an interview for the article, Windom said that he planned to build a foot-tall metal Rook (the castle-shaped piece) in the back yard, "and one day my ashes will be buried underneath it.".>
