Jul-10-15 | | andrewjsacks: No person could have placed more small objects into an apartment in Berkeley or anywhere else than Alan. |
|
Jul-11-15
 | | HeMateMe: His bio mentions that he could play ten board blindfold simuls. Can anyone here shed a little more light on that? |
|
Jul-11-15 | | siggemannen: RIP malthrope |
|
Jul-11-15 | | Benzol: Just heard the shocking news of his passing.
Guess as the years go by there will sadly be more cases of the passing of members. :( |
|
Jul-11-15 | | twinlark: Alan was the gentlest, most pleasant and most agreeable person. R.I.P Alan Benson

Jul-11-15 | | kellmano: Sad news indeed. You could tell by his posts he was a gentle soul. RIP. |
|
Jul-11-15 | | rogge: A few years since he visited cg, but he'll be remembered as one of the nicest guys around. Sad news. |
|
Jul-11-15 | | waustad: I'm sorry to hear this. He was still seen occasionally on chessbomb or chess24 earlier this year. |

 | | Check It Out: RIP, <malthrope>. I always enjoyed the content and tone of your posts. |
|
Jul-20-15 | | guaguanco: I knew him back in Berkeley when I was in high school and he helped run the local game shop and was a TD at the Berkeley Chess Club. Great guy, bought a lot of books from him. |

 | | Check It Out: <Domdaniel: I think Lukey walked into a positional trap with Bxe4. Now he gets one of those very-not-drawn BOOC positions, with the Spider spinning against him.> <An Englishman: Good Morning: <DomDaniel's> "not very drawn" description is a good one, and puts me in mind of Nimzowitsch's masterpieces in BOOC games.> <malthrope: Hehehe... I'm thinking "Bronstein" here! ;) Same idea though (BOOC can turnout to be a big plus if...). :)> <malthropes>'s last post here on CG, displaying his usual kindness. McShane vs Adams, 2010 |

 | | OhioChessFan: A very kind person and sorely missed. I am amazed it's been over 5 years since he graced the site. I recall vividly his obvious delight when his player page was first put up. I will try to search out the post. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Silly me, the post in question was on this very player page, back on page 1. Here it is: <WoW!!! :P
Goodness gracious Batman what's next?!
When did this happen? o_O
OK - think Mal, think.... Now you really gotta organize your best games for download. :) Your Simul games against Grandmasters, games played with other Masters, ICCF Correspondence games with Masters & Experts from around the world, your Blindfold games played in multiple boards Simultaneous Exhibitions, Blitz games and offhand games you've played against strong opposition (it's a very l-o-n-g list!). ~lol~ OMG - it looks like I won't sleep for a week!!! ~ROFL~ My Best Always, - Mal
(aka: Alan Benson, Malthrope)
Berkeley, CA
PS: <ChessDryad: I've known Alan since 1967. He mentored an entire generation of San Francisco Bay Area chess masters.> Thanks to my dear old friend Kerry. :) Me thinks there has recently been a bonding conspiracy between <ChessDryad> and <Chessgames.com> to pull this off and make it all happen! :D PPS: <Chessgames.com> you devils! ;) Um, there is one small mistake in the bio. I was born in Oakland, CA and then raised in San Leandro, CA. :) In addition I'll supply you with a picture too. ;) > |
|
Aug-10-15 | | zanzibar: I guess we never got the picture?( |
|
Aug-11-15
 | | WannaBe: Some guy around here gotta have a picture of Alan, could be from 70s or 80s or 90s... While we are on that subject, maybe more games of his can be found/submitted by others? And tidy up the bio, looks like one long run-on sentence. Probably written by Alan hisself! =) |
|
Aug-11-15 | | waustad: He has several pictures on the <malthrope> page. Several have him meeting very famous players or playing blindfolded. |
|
Aug-11-15 | | twinlark: <WannaBe>
<And tidy up the bio, looks like one long run-on sentence. Probably written by Alan hisself! =)> Apart from breaking the bio up into paragraphs, the only changes I've made to the bio include shortening a couple of really long sentences, removing some superflous verb fragments and a couple of other very minor changes to make it read more fluently. If Alan wrote it originally, the changes are minor enough to retain the essential flavour of what he composed. |

 | | Stonehenge: <maybe more games of his can be found/submitted by others?> I have submitted two of his wins a while ago. |
|
Aug-12-15
 | | WannaBe: <twinlark> Thanks, my man. Much easier read now. You know us wabbits with short attention span can't handle long paragraphs. =)) <Stonehenge> Time to get on CG.com and get those games through the queue. |
|
Aug-12-15 | | Caissanist: I'm afraid this is going to sound rather morbid, but here goes anyway. Does anyone know what is happening to the contents of Alan's apartment? I don't want to be a vulture, but I am in the Bay Area and I hate the thought of multiple boxes of chess history going into a dumpster. According to his G+ page, he had a lot of game scores that he wanted to upload, apparently that did not happen. |
|
Aug-12-15
 | | WannaBe: <Caissanist> You're in the Bay Area, too? Here are 2 links that you may find useful:
http://lmi.berkeleychessschool.org/...
Berkeley Chess School may have some contact or knowledge of next of kin and what is going on with the estate Alan left behind. http://marspolaris.tripod.com/bookc...
I am not sure if call the phone number listed, or visit the apartment and see the manager, any information can be obtained. (Address is about 1/2 way down the page) Good luck with your search! |
|
Aug-12-15
 | | Check It Out: <Caissanist> that's a worthy effort to save <malthrope>'s chess artifacts. I hope you succeed! |
|
Aug-12-15 | | twinlark: <Caissanist> Absolutely! Alan's legacy should be preserved. |
