Jul-05-13  Raisin Death Ray: Don't worry, I'm sure Leno will be on Dancing with the Stars or something! :)

HeMateMe: <Dredge Rivers:> You're as relevant as a new pimple on Selena Gomez.
Jul-31-13  GumboGambit: According to Rybka, Letterman should have chosen retirement over a decade ago.
Aug-05-13  Dredge Rivers: <HeMateMe> Oooo! Good one! I'll have to mention that to Selena when I see her tonight!
Aug-05-13  Dredge Rivers: <GumboGambit> What does Rybka have to say about Leno? That he should take a long walk off a short pier? :)
Aug-05-13  GumboGambit: Rybka says that giving Leno a show at 10 pm was a blunder on par with The Marriage Ref. A much sounder play would have been to keep late night things as they were, and give Fallon the 10 pm gig. If he bombed, then they could just pull the plug without other ramifications to major pieces.

HeMateMe: Jimmie Fallon has rebooted late night talk, by doing so many interesting things with musicians, and music type segments.

I can see why he will replace Leno. It's a shame they didn't give Conan a fair shot at it. His numbers would have been fine, but now he is relegated to some third tier station.

Leno is the last link to the cigar chomping one liner guys of Vegas and Atlantic City. I imagine he'll work forever, but everything changes. I hope Fallon doesn't go mainstream bland when he takes over the Tonight Show.

Aug-09-13  Dredge Rivers: <HeMateMe> Did you hack into one of my posts? Suddenly we agree about Conan?!? When did this happen?
Aug-09-13  Raisin Death Ray: <HeMateMe> On April 28, 2010 you posted that you thought Conan was "finished". On May 4, 2010 AND May 11, 2010 you cast aspersions on the comedy tour Conan was on at the time. On November 13, 2010, you said, "Conan is boring." On December 4, 2010, you asked if his show had been canceled. But, now, all of a sudden, you like him?!? What gives?!? Are you now admitting you were wrong about him all along? If so, I think you should state it directly. Oh, BTW, and apology to <Dredge Rivers> wouldn't hurt.
Aug-12-13  Dredge Rivers: <Raisin Death Ray> Word. :)
Aug-12-13  Dredge Rivers: <keypusher> Where have you been? You haven't posted here since 2010. Are you still a rebel without a clue? :)
Aug-12-13  Dredge Rivers: <HeMateMe> I'm ready for that apology anytime you are.

HeMateMe: Why, look what got Dredged up...The last time dredge posted, Dave Letterman had a full head of hair and Jay Leno was funny. There's no apology for Dredge...
Aug-12-13  Dredge Rivers: <HeMateMe>

1. Jay Leno was NEVER funny.

2. Neither are you.

3. Thank you for making things easy for me. Now I can block you without a shred of doubt.

4. I feel sorry for you. Whatever will you do now that you don't have me to kick around? Probably wallow in self-pity.

HeMateMe: Jimmy Fallon is better than all three, and he gets the Tonight Show gig, next year. Leno can go back to telling one liners to the slot machine addicts at Atlantic City.

OBIT: Leno used to be funny. I remember seeing him perform stand-up in the late 1970s, and he was very funny.

I think Leno started being less funny in the early 1980s. It's been a gradual decline since then, partly due to his selling out to corporate interests (Doritos, anyone?) and partly because age has a way of making all comedians less funny. A comedian can do angry shtick in his 20s, but the same angry shtick in his 50s just makes him sound like a grumpy old man.

HeMateMe: <obit> You're right, he was more interesting, as a younger comic. Maybe his nightclub act is still good, but he has to tell unending one liners for the tonight show monologue.

Around 1980 he was in this movie <Americathon>, which was kind of funny. The USA is so broke, it is putting on a national telethon to raise money. Jay Leno plays this palooka boxer who fights his own mother, in a boxing ring.

Aug-13-13  Abdel Irada: <OBIT: ...partly because age has a way of making all comedians less funny.>

I think it's a good bit more complicated than that.

Major factors would seem to include some or all of the following:

<Familiarity breeds contempt.> Any routine, however funny, if repeated often enough over time, will grow stale.

<Success is the enemy of art.> Comedians who achieve economic "success" lack both the hunger and the clear view of the tragic vanity of modern existence that give humor its bite.

<The well runneth dry.> Over time, even the richest humorous themes become played out, and the comedian's trademark "shtick" begins to droop.

<To every thing, there is a season.> Even after a theme stales, comedians long accustomed to using it may continue to do so, either unaware that it has lost its topicality or, worse, aware of it but unable to adapt and develop new ones.

Aug-13-13  Jim Bartle: All that is true, AI. Yet somehow none of it happened with Johnny Carson.
Aug-13-13  Abdel Irada: Perhaps I should have added another maxim: <To every rule, there is an exception.>

(Actually, George Carlin also occurred to me, although I have still not satisfied myself that he really did remain as funny to the end. But even with Carson, there may be *some* who doubt.)

Aug-13-13  Abdel Irada: All this suggests a new rule: You can remain funny throughout your career only if your last name contains the letter string <C-A-R-<x>-<x>-N>.

(Unfortunately, poor Sidney Carton seems to have missed his calling.)

Aug-13-13  JustAFish: A person who is funny for a long time is not the person who has a "Schtick", but is one who has a humorous, observant, quirky outlook on life. One doesn't have to tell "jokes" in order to be amusing, one simply has to be the kind of person who sees humor in life.
Aug-13-13  John Abraham: I love Craig Ferguson although I will admit he was a lot funnier and wittier in his old studio, now he seems kind of plain and tired
Aug-13-13  JimNorCal: Is Letterman still alive?

I don't watch those shows currently, but I did read this comment recently: “The Nielsen ratings for the second week in July have Leno beating CBS’s David Letterman by a 43 percent margin.”

OK, fine, say that Leno is in his twilight...but at least he has an audience.

Aug-13-13  The Diamond: <Abdel Irada>: I think Sidney would have been the worst of comedians, even in the best of times. He'd be laughing his head off while the rest of the audience was dabbing their eyes with regret.
